Team California Demarini Falling Apart?

by #1fann » Tue Nov 08, 2011 7:02 pm

Just a quick reply to watchtons. How many other organizations in this area have any 16u kids already committed to colleges? Certainly not the Breeze, Lady Magic, or the Comets. If i had a 12u girl playing, i`d definitely try to get her in with Klein & Topping hands down! The organizations to be involved with for the older girls are AASA or the Sorcerers. Read the SacBee. 3 girls signing letters this week alone and several more on the way very soon for AASA. Lady Magic was loaded last year, it`s cyclical, their time has passed. The Breeze haven`t been a factor for quite some time. Until they wake up and get a reputable player rep, they are a waste of time at the older levels.

Well, according to the Lady Magic website, they have SEVEN players signing NLI's this week, "and several more on the way very soon". And it looks to me like the Breeze are about to sign SIX players to NLI's. You're kidding yourself if you think the Breeze or LM time has passed. Both of those organizations have contacts deep into all of the major D1 and D2 conferences.

From what I heard, LM had a closed, private college preview night for ALL of the girls in their organization in October and had coaches from several Pac-12, Big West, Pacific Coast, WAC and CALPAC schools in attendance. Having talked to several of the LM parents, there were more than a few girls on all the teams (14u included) who had a lot of interest shown. Is there any other organization in the Sacramento area that has this kind of event exclusively for their players?

Anywho.....

I also think that Lady Magic and the Breeze nowhere near "down cycles". The 96 and 97 teams for both organizations are very talented, nationally competitive teams.

That said, all of the kids who are verballed are on the 18Gold teams for these orgs, not the 16, 14 or 12U teams. Which is why I don't think it makes sense to grade Team California based on college signings. I see that AASA 18 Gold has one 2014 kid going to Washington, and Sorcerer 18 Gold has 2 2014 kids with verbals, but most of the kids who have a commitment of any sort are 2012-2013 kids, Juniors and Seniors.

My point isnt that kids arent verballed at the 16u level, dont know where that is coming from as I never said that. My point is 16u is a CRITICAL time to start making your way on the recruiting map. Thats it, nothing more. LM and Breeze will always get kids to colleges. #1fann hit the nail on head with Breeze and needing a player rep. 18G LM is down this year and will be after that many kids go off to college. Rebuilding stage for them and playing .500 ball this fall or worse:( . 16u hasn't been much better this fall according to the tweets. I know they lost some players. Its a transitioning time. They will be fine I'm sure. Next year LM 18G coaches will give way to the 16u team so that will be another transition that I will sit back and watch. Fact remains that there is enough people in both orgs to get kids seen. It helps having a reputable name and in Nor Cal there isnt a whole lot. This is why it was important for TC to make that name. The coaches there are top notch, no doubt, I'd just like to see them get these kids in the right direction. Its not an easy road. Sorcerers and AASA has done a phenominal job at recruiting for a while now. Current teams are no different.

IMHO, college coaches are pulling back a bit from the early commit trend, lest the NCAA decide to get involved and outright ban the practice. That said, NLI's are what are important, and in the end all that count. If you must judge teams based on their players college commitments, count the NLI's only. Obviously, newly formed teams don't have that track record no matter who their coach is.

Given that college's cannot/will not discuss commits, any kids parent can claim their DD is committed to any school they want. Most of those end up being walk-ons. All you have to do is look at the University of Arizona Wildcats to see how valuable a walk-on is.

Slightly off topic, but while looking at the AASA/Sorcerer websites, it does look like the University of Washington is doing some pretty good scouting in this area, with two 2014 and a 2013 commitment from those two teams alone. Two of those girls are at Casa Roble, we'll see if they can win their section again with a new coach.

AASA-Heinz has some other very talented 96-2014 kids that I would expect to see picked up shortly.

Early commits are NOT going away any time soon. What you are going to see and hear more and more about is decommitt's. I hear about one a month now, and thats just in our neck of the woods.

Word is that the TC organization is being disbanded after this weekend. How unfortunate for all those young ladies whom had hoped for good coaching and an experience to play with the said, "best of the best."

Sad if true.
