Team is in socal playing AZ Hot Shots 4th or 5th inning score is 0-0. New pitcher for Hot Shots and first pitch drills umpire in throat, he goes down and this could be ugly. The guys is in serious pain and we get an ambulance.
He is not from socal and has some issues going on that could make it difficult to get home and he is back the next day doing games as he needs the money. He cant speak at all. He comes to us before our first game hugs us for helping him, is as emotional as hell as I think we all were as this could have killed the man.
My girls see this, hear his story and we get a collection going to help him. The girls get a ball, they all sign it and after our game we present him with the ball and the money. He is in tears, I am in tears, my girls are in tears and we all just experienced one of the greatest moments I have ever had on a softball field.
I could not be more proud of the young ladies on my team who showed that being a human and taking care of others is far more important than a softball game.
It is moments like these that puts the game in perspective.
