Considering the fact you see about a million teams looking for players right now, Id say tryouts are only over in the older ages.

If you have enough players to field a team in 12u.... you are a winner.

I have never seen as many teams looking for players ... EVER in this area as what we have right now. It is unbelievable.

amen, how do we fix this? its gross

It's not overly complicated, onlooker. There's no need for anyone to "fix this".

If there are more teams that athletes, less teams result. It's been several years since this has happend but not uncommon. Quite a few years back when my DD was in TB in the area, we experienced about a 3 year period where the number of teams grew, then suddenly contracted. With all the additional teams that have shown up over the past few years in the area, things fix themselves. The area can only support and sustain so many teams.

Hey there. I am new to HB. I totallly agree with you. I live in Monterey County and my DD has played travel since she was 9 (will be 12 in 2012). Did one year of 10's and now on 2nd year of 12's. Since she has been playing travel, there have been so many new teams form..particulary in the 12's age group. I think we have more solid teams in the Salinas/Monterey Peninsula area if we narrowed it down to just a few. There are 6 in 12's right now that I can think of....arg!!

There are a lot of factors that come into play here. One is of course is when Dad wants to field a team for his DD and wants to be the good guy where he invites many of his girls from his rec team that he previously coached. Thus causing the watered down effect with a large number of B teams.

Most of the parents who have a good understanding of where their DD's talent level lies will comprehend this and tryout where appropriate.

Another BIG contributor to teams still looking for players falls back to coaching and their reputation. You look at teams that had a full roster last year or even more recently in fall whom are now looking for players to field a team....AFTER THEY JUST HAD THEIR TRYOUTS!! Hmmm? Just a thought.

another BIG factor is other sports. In the 14 and ups most girls have specialized to 1 sport but the younger players are still playing soccer and VB, basketball, etc... Sure the coaches reputations have a part and the team funds too but other interests I bet are the #1 reason. they will all be full up and running come April/May once other sorts are done.

the biggest part of the problem is there simply aren’t enough QUALITY pitcher and catchers in the 12's. So we have 20 teams and about 6-10 quality pitchers and catchers in the Modesto Stockton area. And 1 team has 3 of them each. Then if you have a good catcher or pitcher the rest of the team seems to be lacking. So you’re stuck with the choice of moving up or playing on a middle of the road team. ( if your one of the quality pitcher and catchers)IMO

Very good point about pitchers and catchers. They seem to be far and few, well the good ones anyway.

I hear the Breeze 97 added 2 stud Pitchers to an already very strong roster. Could be their year...
