Open Tryouts

Would you cut a kid that had been with you for two years for a kid that plays for a different team every year, but is a better player than your returning player? I wouldn't....but I was never in danger of having more than 5-6 kids at my tryouts...because I told parents calling me that I was keeping all the players that chose to return to my team....and let them know that I had only one pitching position available....or that I already have 2 catchers...etc. I felt it was my responsibility to give them as much info as possible in order for them to choose the best team and tryout for their child.

I would not cut any kid that has showed the dedication and hard work I require as a coach. However I may direct them to another area where they could aid the team. Perhaps another position or role depending on the situation and the player. The goal in my eyes is the TEAM. This is the problem I see most with new parents/players. They only see one player their DD. I do my best to make my athletes play for the name on the front of the jersey not the back.

DD was actually a victim of this exact scenario just a couple of weeks ago. Her TB coach posted tryouts online. I called to ask him if he wanted returning players at tryouts. He said yes but that he "wasn't looking to cut anyone". This is a 95 team moving up to 14U. Tryouts went fine. Received a call a full 4 days later from him saying that she'd been cut from the team and that he opted to pick up 4 '94 players that showed up to try out. Later I found out that she was the only returning player cut. What puzzles me is that she was definitely one of the harder working girls on the team and had one of the best attitudes. Coach opted for a little better talent in exchange for a year's worth of drama from parents and attitude from players. More power to him. DD is using it to motive her when she plays against her former team.

In order to keep this post relevant to the OP, coach posted open tryouts and that's what they were in the truest sense of the term.

He's playing some fall ball and then he plans to do as much indoor training during the winter that he can with whoever is allowed to do it. Different players are from different schools and some coaches black out their players from the start of the school year through the high school season and some only black out from Jan 1st through the end of the season. Most of the girls on the team (both 94s and 95s) are already on a high school squad. I think there are a couple of home-schooled girls but I don't know. He doesn't plan on starting back up until after Mother's Day.

I'm interested in seeing what he'll do next year when his '94s can't play with him anymore. The pool isn't very deep around here... I guess we'll see.

Home schooled girls are still eligible to play (at least around here) sports at the school that they are zoned for.

everyone knows when an established team has "open tryouts", they have a few girls in mind but wanna see if any "surprises" show up they werent aware of...took my dd just to see if she could hang with older elite team and wasnt excepting much...but got the call back first weekend and then the invite second weekend...if they open door, its up to your dd to step through...

Why don't you people go back and look at the OP....it was about "all positions open and earned", not "open tryouts." Allow me to define the difference:

Open tryout - This is a tryout open to all comers....you don't need an invitation. It has nothing to do with returning players. The returning players have a position on the team.

All Positions Open - This is a tryout for the entire team. Returners are competing against players trying out. The coach is SAYING that they will pick the best players and will have no problem cutting a returner.

Thanks for the clarification. Using your definitions of the terms, I would say that our former coach posted an "Open Tryout" but our players were required to attend. He never mentioned "All positions open". Conversations with him stongly suggested that it would be an "Open Tryout", but it ended up being "All positions open". I just wish he would have advertised it as such. I probably should have inferred an "All positions open" scenario given that returning players were required to attend despite the "not looking to cut anyone" comment. Not a big deal -- you learn and grow from it.
