.... right context.....

I think a "USA, USA, USA" chant is great thing- especially in the right context.

I stand by what I said. My family is made up of czech, german, swede, hispanic, mexican, and who knows what else. If someone is offended by a "USA USA USA" chant, then get the hell out. Now.

Donnie- I think the offense was not the chant, but how it was used and intended. Why do you think the winning coach stopped it? The implication was "We are American and your not" It appears that how it was intended and how it was taken. Would they have chanted the same thing after beating a predominately white school? This was not a patriotic gesture- this was some dumba** hijacking a great chant to make an ethnic slur.

BTW- we are of similar backgrounds:

I am English, German, Czech & Scot- (in other words a mutt)

Don't know the details about the Mexican flag in a school etc..... I grew up in a very Irish town and this time of year(ST Patrick's day) it was not uncommon to see many Irish flags hanging- I'm sure I would have been in a heap of trouble if I tore one down

Believe it or not...I agree with J/R on this one. When I initially saw this story on the news the other night, my impression was that the White students were using the chant innappropriately, as a racial slam.

Wait a minute...did I just say that I agreed with JonRiv outloud??

Yeah, heaven forbid that the white people be proud of their country.
That is racist and phobic. We need to embrace all cultures even as they line up for every handout, refuse to learn the language, and demand we adapt to them instead of vice versa.

They are not being proud of their country- they are disgracing it by trying to demean others. The kids they interviewed looked well adjusted and spoke english-not looking for handouts.

Unless and even if your Great Great Grandfathers name was Chief Running Mouth ... Please explain how many years it took your ancestors to learn the language & how many years of ignorant prejudice they suffered ...

Be careful that's conspiracy talk.
AND... Collectivist / Marxist Indoctrination is the PURPOSE of GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS, always has been.

THEN:

We who are engaged in the sacred cause of education are entitled to look upon all parents as having given hostages to our cause.
Horace Mann, First Secretary of Education in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, "Father" of public schooling (1796-1859)

The children who know how to think for themselves spoil the harmony of the collective society which is coming, where everyone would be interdependent.
John Dewey, American educator, philosopher (1859-1952)

The education of all children, from the moment that they can get along without a mother's care, shall be in state institutions at state expense.
Friedrich Engels "Principles of Communism" (1847) - draft of what became the Communist Manifesto

Education... has become in most countries at the present day a national concern. The state receives, and often takes, the child from the arms of the mother to hand it over to official agents; the state undertakes to train the heart and to instruct the mind of each generation. Uniformity prevails in the courses of public instruction as in everything else; diversity as well as freedom is disappearing day by day. -
Alexis de Tocqueville, French author of Democracy in America (1805-1859) Democracy in America, Volume 2, Fourth Book

and NOW

It's time to admit that public education operates like a planned economy, a bureaucratic system in which everybody's role is spelled out in advance, and there are few incentives for innovation and productivity. It's no surprise that our school system doesn't improve: It more resembles the communist economy than our own market economy. -
Albert Shanker, late president, American Federation of Teachers (1928-1997) "Reding, Wrighting & Erithmatic," New York Times, Where We Stand, July 23, 1989

Through a process of gradualism Americans have come to accept the idea that they are not in a position to direct the education of their own children. Instead of being pissed about they way things are, do something about it.

But at the same time, I have to wonder.....why would the fans be chanting "USA" at a HS basketball game? Was it intentional? Were they looking to instigate something?

I agree in that, I can't understand why US citizens were "insulted" by such a chant. But then again....everyone has the right to be insulted by whatever they choose.

Wierd story....and I'm thinkin' details are missing.

Coach, thats my feeling and I reacted to it before trying to find out more about it. There is a victim culture here that looks for things they can be victimized by - but even then, what an honor "USA USA USA" - why didnt both schools stand up and do the cheer.

And all things being the same, I think that the school officials who apologized for their kids doing the USA USA USA cheer, - should be fired on the spot. We have enough losers in high places apologizing for us being American.

I think a "USA, USA, USA" chant is great thing- especially in the right context. A victory against a foreign team, celebrating returning veterans etc.. In this case I think it this case it was a mis-use of a great chant.

I think you need to look at the intent of the chant-- was it a spontaneous swelling of patriotism- or was it a slur not so subtly implying "your not part of us"?

I don't think the school officials were apologizing for the words of the chant, but the intent. If it were meant as an insult(who would know better than the officials there) then it was a very unpatriotic use of that chant and it fact a disgrace to it.

If it was meant as a celebration to the county- than by all means both sides should join in proudly, but does anyone really think that was really the case?

That's exactly what I was thinking. My mother brought this story up the other night. She started off by saying "I didn't see the whole story...." She was obviously outraged by it, but I didn't bother getting into a discussion about it. She's recently become an avid viewer of FOX TV and seems to have the same issues with nuance as they do.

Again....without more backround on the story, or possible "lead-up" to the game, I'm figuring there was more than national pride involved with the chant.
