High School Ball

What's on your mind?

by Sftbll4ever » Thu Jan 31, 2008 11:24 am

So begins another year of HS ball. (Well for most people) So the drama begins with try-outs and how little Suzie did not get on Varsity again and how did so and so make it over her. The coach is an idiot.

I just thought I would open up a topic for all the HS talk to begin have it be complaining to WE ROCK.

I'll start. New year for our school and we are already starting off on a good note. New coach and new excitement for the program. We are definitely not one of the strongest teams out there and this year we are very young. I do think that the talent is there for our school and am very excited to see what the coach does with the new position.

We did have a little Suzie incident though. We have one that is going to quit because they did not make varsity, again. Unfortunately, this happens everywhere and kids feel that since they are playing travel, the deserve varsity. Not always true. I still think it depends on the team they play on.

Good Luck to all this year!!!

WE have a new coach but I dont have any problems with the level of high school ball here personally. We have a team that should take us to state it is a young team but alot of good players. So I am looking forward to a nice school year.

my oldest daughter is a senior this year, at a school near yours, Sftbll4ever, but much closer to downtown and the water...

this will be her 4th year on varsity, and we have seen the program grow from not having enough girls for a jv team in her freshman year, to having over 50 girls try out this year...pretty cool.

anyways, the program got a couple new coaches last season, and they brought a nice spirit to the program, which historically has never been strong.
they started 5 freshmen last year, and all the girls are returning this year. it's a nice group of kids and they all get along. they work hard and have alot of fun.
my kid should play some, but i think she likes the social aspect of being on the team more than anything...
so, no complaints here. my kid knows the more she works, the more she plays, but again, she likes hanging with her friends more than anything...
Deserve's got nothin' to do with it.

This will probably be my only post on this thread since for the 3rd straight year, my DD (a junior now) has decided to pass on HS ball. So while her friends' parents are venting to me about the idiot coach, the politics etc etc, I'll just smile and nod.

Is that your DD running? That is awsome!!! I think that as long as they are happy, who cares if they play for the school. My kid likes playing for the school and is happy to do so for the 2nd year.

Good Luck to her in Track. I did that my senior year too. Great experiance.

My DD is only in 7th grade, but most of the girls from her 14U team from last year are in 9th and trying out for HS ball.

One of the mom's told me this week that it may be tough for her girl to make the team, since there are only 3 spots open. I said "3 spots open?" It seems that girls that were on the team from last year get a free pass through try-outs, and they only replace the seniors from last year. I hope she is mistaken about that, or if not, I hope that coach isn't still there in 2 years when my DD is in 9th.
Proud fastpitch, baseball, volleyball, soccer, basketball, etc. Dad :)

Dont listen to the moms - just get through the season, have as much fun as she can have playing with her neighborhood buds. Our new head coach says 'we are going to state' and I think all of the girls have bought into it. I am about to get my hotel rooms reserved.

If you and your daughter are who I think you are, I would love to hear your daughter's reasoning.

Arguably the best Softball player in the Marmonte League, and she doesn't even play HS SB. Pretty funny. At least she is running track. Another area Softball girl is doing the same thing at another school.

Jo,
From my past experience with the soap opera of HS ball. I wouldnt listen to none of the parents. They in their minds have the starting lineup figured out, who made the team and who will destroy the team if they make it.
When my DD was in the 8th grade and it was about this time of year. The phone calls started. Who did I think would make the JV team, etc? I already knew my DD was on the team b/c the HS coach called me and told me that he was expecting big things from my DD. Then the rumors started. None of the 8th graders was making the JV. Then we heard that my DD wasnt on the team and that a Freshman was going to pitch, then we heard that another 8th grader was going to be the pitcher. We were informed of who was playing what position, who was moving up on varsity and so on and so on.
So about a week before JV tryouts, mind you the varsity team started tryouts the week before the JV team was to tryout. The HS coach calls the middle school and informs them that he wants my DD to be at the softball field when the varsity was trying out. Well as you would expect. The phone calls started again..... Why was my DD the only 8th grader trying out with the varsity? I knew why but didnt pass the info on b/c I wanted them to squirm.
So at the end of week, final cuts were made on Varsity and DD was still there. Other parents pissed off, Im still not saying anything. The following week JV started tryouts. DD was not present at tryouts. She is working out with Varsity b/c off upcoming scrimmages. She travels with varsity ot scrimmages to pitch along with starting varsity pitcher. Varsity pitcher arm is sore due to not working out in of season. My DD is in perfect condition due to travel ball coach making her workout all winter.
To make matters worse she is pitching all scrimmages, jamborees etc. JV parents are now fuming b/c they feel like their kids should be there as well. She did great and now kids on Varsity want her to stay.
So when scrimmages are over and its back to practice she is back at JV due to state rules. She goes on to pitch all the JV games. She had 2 perfect games and countless shoutouts. Angry parents now have forgotten about preseason antics.
Her freshman year same craps start again. Now its coming from Varsity parents. My DD is staying down on JV, no freshman will make varsity and so on and so on.........
Same thing happens again to upperclassman pitcher, no winter workouts and she is hurt before season starts. DD pitches all scrimmages and jamborees. Does great! At start of season varsity parents complaining that freshman will get the team killed....... It takes all of the regular season to get it thru these peoples head that DD is doing a great job. Her district ERA is 0.00 her overall ERA is 0.31. Upperclassman pitcher decides that she is ready to pitch, now the parents are concerned that my DD isnt pitching. We go on to finish 3rd in state. We were knocked out of state tour by the 5th ranked HS team in nation 1 to 0. She garners the POY award for district, 1st team all district, all region team.
Moral of the story......... Dont listen to other parents. They have no clue as to what is best for the team. They have to justify their ignorance and love spreading gossip just to try and piss you off.

For God's sake, Lannie, learn spelling and 2nd grade grammar. What you say is correct but people are not going to take you serious when you sound like you come out of the inter city hood.

Regarding "Moral of the story......... Dont listen to other parents." , this is so true - the tough thing is that the most uninformed of those parents always sounds like they have an inside track.
