Didn't pick the kid beacuse of the parents

What's on your mind?

How many times have you heard this. The Coach loved the kid but didn't pick her because of the parents. This year alone I heard 2 or 3 Coaches say that.
I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work."

I have heard of it often but have never done that, though wish I did once ... but the following year when we put together that Fall Ball Rec Team I did forget to call her ... here is another one that I never did, but saw it happen several times : the kid getting picked because the mother was hot ... Nothing wrong when you have 2 kids with similar abilities and skills and the tie breaker is that kid 1 has parents that are ALWAYS causing controversy and problems on teams. Kid 2 gets the call every time in my book. Even if kid 2 may be close, but not as good as kid 1. I'll take the kid who comes without the headaches. My perspective is from 12U level and I'm sure that would be less of an issue in 16U and up.

Seen it... done it
Would do it again.

Recommended to current coaches that it be done on a particular (good) player prospect.

...sad
Being from NorCal, what do I know anyway???

The coach is responsible for the entire team including the actions of the parents. Picking a kid with irrational parents is inviting trouble which could include losing good kids with good parents due to association.

I heard that happening this year and the parents don't even know it.
Why didn't my kid make the team, well we just didn't need her...THE TRUTH: because you start trouble on every team you have ever been on and your kid isn't good enough to put up with your bullsh%t

The actions of parents can completely tear apart a team. If you are looking for short term success, you can get away with a great player, with bad parents.

The longer you hold onto that player, the bigger impact the parents will have on the team.

I will hear of a promising kid, but the first thing I want to know about is the parents.

The only time we would consider a kid with "Problem Parents" is if they own a well-lit, heated polebarn or own a charterbus company and even then its still a longshot at best. :D
