Kids were texting in the dugout.

What's on your mind?

I went to a junior high game this week and it was pretty awful. I heard the coach say to the team, put the cell phones away or I will take them. They ignored him. One girl on the bench, texted the whole game. The girls would come in from the field and gather around "miss phone girl" and ask to send a text or read what was being sent.

The coach would have to yell at the girls to take the field, 2-3 times and also yell at them when they were on deck.

The coach was by himself, but still, I would have sent the girls home rather than put up with being ignored and defied.

This was an 8th grade team. The 7th grade team was pretty good and had 2 really good pitchers. I asked why the good pitchers weren't on the A team and I was told that they keep each grade together.

I thought, "Well i bet you guys don't scrimmage because the B team would win. " :)

Oh, and it was 96 degrees at 4PM and neither dugout had water. I didn't understand that at all.

yeah, we had to put in a rule last season that all electronics are shut off before warmups. if we have a game break at a friendly, i dont care if they do that stuff, but if not, they stay off in their bags during the games...

I see it alot now in restaurants, etc....families eating dinner, and their kid totally ignoring everyone with their head buried in their phone texting away...

boy the times they are a changin!
Deserve's got nothin' to do with it.

Most rule sets only allow communication devices related to scorekeeping to be used on the playing field or dugouts.

I had a coach using a cell phone in the firstbase coaching box last weekend. Our conversation went something like this:

Me: Coach, you cannot use your cell phone while during the game. Please end the call.
Coach: (Ends the call) It's my wife, I have to take her calls.

Two innings later he's on the phone again in the coach's box.

Me: Coach, please discontinue the call or I will have to take further action.
Coach: I told you that I have to take my wife's calls.
Me: Next time you take her call during the game, let her know you're done coaching for the day.
Coach: Now you're being a smarta$$.
Me: You can share that perception with her when you get home.

If these kids spent half of the amount of time swinging off a tee, or fielding grounders as they did on their phone, they would be even more amazing athletes. They just don't see it that way.
It's better to keep your mouth shut and look like you're stupid......
than to open it and remove all doubt.

In my opinion it's very disrespectful to the people you are with to be texting someone else in their presence. You're basically saying "you aren't good enough for me...I'd rather be somewhere else, with someone else." If my kid does that she will lose her phone, and she knows it. (Although I'm a little more lenient with family. A kid needs to be able to blow her family off from time to time...especially if her dad is me. )

Personally I wouldn't allow the girls on the team to text even during game breaks. That's when they should be interacting with each other...they've got the rest of the week to devote to their school friends. JMO.

Who, my dd? Nah...she's on the bench for far more legitimate reasons than that.

LOL Skarp...I'm sure your kid is on the bench for other reasons (see "problem Parent" thread)...but I was referring to "miss phone girl".

Its 8th grade, School Ball, the coach is by himself, I'm sure he has bigger fish to fry. He probably draws the line at Smoking, or shooting dice, in the dug out. If I were him, id probably be glad they were texting, at least then they wouldnt bother me about playing time! I mean really, what is she missing? If she wasnt texting, would she be stealing signs? Charting pitches? Watching the runners for stealing? Watching for the bunt? NAW, dont kid yourself. That poor coach is probably on suicide watch and is doing the right thing by picking his battles. Now if a tb player did that, it would be a different story. My parents sign something at the begining that allows me to give their kids a good shaking if I see fit. Texting during a game equals a good shaking in my book.
