Batbuster tourneys have been doing it for years. To be in his tournaments you have to book so many rooms at one of the "approved" hotels and they do call and check to make sure the team is staying at the specified hotels.

In other words, the organizations that are doing this are also getting kick backs from the hotels. Just another way of making money.

I realize that TCS isn't THE main stop on the tour of Nationals, but no doubt they would like to be. I just can't see where this is going to make them popular, given for how stinkin' expensive they are already. Nat's are $775 - I see the local tourney here that we're already paying $475 for this weekend goes to $515 in the Spring.

Quality tourneys, well run, etc, but not THAT much of a difference to justify $515 !!!

ASA already does that, a couple years back in 16U in South Dakota when you went to register your team you received a number. To get hotel reservation you needed this number. On the back of the door in the hotel room the regular price was posted, the ASA rate was more than 25%.

This year, ASA didn't seem care if we stayed in a TENT!

I can see the argument about obvious hotel kickbacks, or room discounts for a group as they would like to promote, but in times like this, wouldn't you think tournaments at a local as well as a National level would be doign everything they can to reduce costs and attract teams rather than alienate them?

I doubt we'd be going to PCU for a TCS National anyway, but as I was wasting my boss's time and money playing on the internet I came across this and my very first reaction was that there was simply no way I would take a team to a tourney that was pulling shady crap like that.

I was there last year and heard that this is the last year of the contract for Park City. Sounds like they are trying to inflate their profit this year to make it more attractive for another host city. They also changed the way you qualify as well.

--Don't have to qualify at a tournament, only have to play 3 events and you can go to nationals

sounds to me like someone is trying to pad the bottom line. Kind of like right before a company gets sold, they get rid of employees, close locations, that way it LOOKS like they are in the black.

You are given a list of approved lodging options and you have to report where you are staying to the TD by X date. If you are staying at an unapproved option....you are risking your entry...there are lots of teams on waiting lists that would be more than happy to stay in an approved location.
