This question is obsolete!
~ nobody teaches to start your swing with your hands...
*** There is a heel-toe action right after the stride foot lands that starts a chain reaction. The front heel lands, the back heel lifts and begins to pivot. This activates the hips which activates the upper body.
~ a short/direct path to the ball is the most efficient way to get the barrel to the ball. Its short, quick and explosive. NOT linear!
*** Yes its down to the ball! Dropping the barrel so you can swing up to the ball forces the barrel to cast away from your body, hence a long swing. Keeping the barrel above your hands creates the shortest path to the ball. It also puts the wrists in the proper position to accelerate the barrel through the zone.
The pertinent question is: Do you have a long or short swing? This is a major factor in determining how consistent and how quickly you get the barrel to the ball...
> Very athletic softballers can get away with a long up to the ball swing with loaded bats and oversized sweet spots. The question is will they be able to against college pitching?
