What's on your mind?

by greenandblue » Mon Oct 06, 2008 7:12 pm

Okay, replace the words "drinking" with sht-faced drunk in my previous posts. Does that make a difference?

I am referring to a girl that has been on my DD's teams throughout the years. Her mother gets falling-down drunk probably 4 days/nights out of 7. I have seen this girl deal with this for over 10 years and have watched her mom fall off the bleachers more than once while her daughter is at bat, in tears. It was horrible to watch when the child was 10 years old, and it's just as bad now that she's 17. Thankfully, now the daughter can drive them home (but only when she can get the keys away from her mom). The child goes to other parents and asks them to try to get her keys.

Skarp, I'm not sure how my previous comment portrayed me as a weakling, (again) but I have a feeling why someone like you would think that way. How about if you find someone that was raised in an alcoholic home and ask them what it was like? Or try to imagine yourself as a kid in this situation? Or are you unable to do that?

Getting drunk every night and neglecting the basic needs of your children and having a couple of drinks at the ball park is like night and day. Like i said it has to be in moderation and it cannot interfere with the team. I am a coach so i dont personally pop a top until the day is over and im chilling with the parents while the kids blow off a little stem or eat or rest or whatever. If i had a parent that was disrupting my team or the team i was playing i would adress it. I asked my daughter if drinking with the other parents offended her or if she had heard anyhting from any of her freinds and she said no so as far as crushing anyones self esteem or whatever that big line of melodramatic BS was it obviously only applies to the more sensitive of people.

GB- We need to help you with the terms "Exception" vs. "Generalization" .... first it was in "general" children would not choose to be in private school over public school and now.. one mother, with a serious problem, makes the reset of us irresponsible if we have a drink during a tournament.

I do agree, getting drunk during a tournament is wrong and parents should be responsible....I will give you that! Just don't assume or judge that all parents don't know how to drink responsibly...

Cheers :D

Ours has become a pathetically weak culture, and GB, you are exhibit A. Oh dear, we can't have our kids going to a school not of their choosing. Oh my, we can't allow our kids to see anything that might wound their delicate sensibilities.

100 years ago our kids would have already been required to work to pull their weight in the family. They would have been expected to address adults as "sir" and "ma'am"...that is, when they were invited to speak at all. And their opinions on family decisions would have been accorded their actual value--roughly zero. But of course that was back when kids were actually raised to have character. Now it's child abuse if they don't have unlimited texting and a My Space account.

You been watching "Little house on the prairie" again or "Rifleman" even better. Mark was a problem child.

If you are reading this while sober, it is my job to inform you that your child is crushed and mortified that you are drinking. Their hearts are racing, their emotions are raw and they are so embarassed by your actions! It's bad enough that they see you drinking at home, but now you are drinking/drunk in their comfort zone. If you can't go a couple hours or an afternoon without drinking, have someone else take your child, please don't think that you aren't hurting anyone. You are hurting your child, and in my opinion, there's no crime worse than that.

If you are reading this while already drunk, HEY MORON, YOU ARE A LOSER!!!

I didn't notice a smiley in your post so I guess you are serious???
That has got to be one of the all time feel good BS lines I have ever read.
My kid is mortified and crushed? Oh Please. If that is the case I better get my kid in therapy
It's bad enough they see me drinking at home? ROTFLMAO I thought prohibition was repealed.

Dude, you need a drink to take the edge off

"Pull the weight in the family" - still alive in South, East and West Texas (farms and ranches).
"sir" and "ma'am"... - still nothing wrong with that
"when they were invited to speak at all. " - spent the first two years of her life trying to get her to walk and talk, the next 13 to sit down and shut up.
"Now it's child abuse if they don't have unlimited texting and a My Space account." - I go to court on those counts this Friday.

When my DD's were little ... they would sneak a sip out of my brewski when I sat it down ... as they got a little older and were fetching me a new frosty from the cooler or frig, the new one would always seem to be not quite as full as a new one should be ... As they got still a little older , after a day working cutting fire wood ("Pull the weight in the family" - still alive in South") or whatever the project for the day was ... and we would take a little down time to fish or walk in the woods ... there came a time when they asked for their own beverage to split ... being rasied in a family where this was the natural progression, I also saw the advantages of my personal beverage not being depleted prematurely ... so I agreed, hoping that this would teach them that there is in fact a place and a time for everything, and consumption of an adult beverage is not something that needs to be ashamed of, even if you are technically drinking it before what society tells us is the legal age ... Moving forward to last Friday night ... my 2 youngest DD's get a call from a friend who needs a ride to the dance ... a group of 10 of them meet at another friends house where 6 of them are upstairs ( presumably electrifying Mountain Dew ) and 4 are downstairs ( 2 of which are my DD's ) ... the 4 leave for the Dance and are there about a half hour before the hear the kid they gave the ride to earlier has been arrested ... DD's get pulled into the back room for a breathilizer ... when the cop and Principal asked them how is it they were the only ones of this group who weren't drunk ... their response's were "we can have a drink at home if I want it ... we play sports for this school and know we would be kicked off the team,we would also get suspended and my parents would beat our ass plus we were driving ... of the 10, 6 got suspended for 10 days and one guy in their group of 4 had a tin of Copenhagen in his pocket and got time off for that ... So, a time and a place for everything and getting falling down drunk at the ball field probably isn't a great idea, going out to the truck and having one in between games on a hot afternoon or into the restaurant if the facility has one ... why not ? I'd rather that than a parent I had, (who said she didn't drink ) screaming out Bu#*+hit from the stands because she apparantely couldn't control her dosage of anti depresents, valium, percosets or whatever, which probably she had a perscription for ... LMAO

fastpitch city wrote:Okay, I know I'm probably going to get some grief on this, but here goes. Today, we are at a tournament, there is a dad on one team and a mom on another team and they spend a good majority of the day going out to the car drinking. In between games the dad starts smack talking to girls on another team (14U). Most of the girls know the guy and just ignore it, but some of the girls seemed upset by it. The mom from the other team, well all I can say is "WOW" what an example to set for your daughters! So my question is what do you do think about parents that spend the afternoon getting drunk at the ballpark, then start mouthing off in front of the girls? I am not a prude, and on more than one occasion, have thought to myself, this game is too intense, I really would enjoy a drink right now. However, common sense kicks in and I really don't think that is what I want my daughter to learn from me. Thoughts????

Maybe they have to medicate to be able to sit through the debacle that is their teams.

I know I can't coach mine sober.
