Ballpark behavior

What's on your mind?

There are lots of good stories on this post. :-). For what it is worth, I would say parents should refrain from drinking at any of their childs sports events. Softball - soccer - basketball ... whatever. Those parents are setting a bad example. Period. They run the risk of driving drunk and making a total ass of themselves, in public, in front of their kids. Not a good idea. If you want to drink at home or go to bars in the evenings, away from your kids, go for it.

I can say on occasion I have had a beer or 2 at the fields, or at an establishment during a break... But it was social, not because of a need for alcohol and the intent was to "have a beer",, not get snookered. And I am OK with parents that want to do that. I have friends that spend countless hours on countless weekends at the fields. Who am I to judge them if they want to drink a beer on a beautiful Sunday (like this past weekend) at the park? My guess would be MINIMUM 2-5 people out of every 100 are drinking at the fields in some form on a long day/2-day weekend tournament. I have seen blenders going off in motor homes in a parking lot 15' from a foulpole w/10U players(with parent going back and forth to refresh during kids game) and I have seen bloody marys being mixed at 8am. I wasnt associated to either of those teams but point is is happens always. Oh, and how may people on a game break at Alicia head over to Oggi's for a beer with thier pizza in between games? Anything in moderation is somewhat acceptable, IMO. Drinking and kid sports dont mix but travel softball is a lifestyle and consumes a majority of your time & $. I wont judge any of my 50+ hour a week, hard-working friends as long as they can handle themselves appropriately...

and i think some of the posters need to step off the soapbox and step back into reality.
The spirit, the will to win, and the will to excel are the things that endure.
These qualities are so much more important than the events that occur.

You only run the risk of drunk driving if you're a) drunk, and b) driving. And you only run the risk of making a total ass of yourself if drinking causes you to make a total ass of yourself. Many don't suffer from that affliction.

Ace, I have you beat by 10 years.

But, are any of you seeing beer being sold at the concession stands? That started a few years ago at some LL games. I was just wondering if it continues, anywhere.

The last place that I saw it was Prescott, AZ.

It is odd how drinking is associated with baseball and softball. I have never seen anyone drink during baskeball tournaments and volleyball games.

Skarp I hear what you're saying but a lot of people don't realize they are drunk ( or drunks ) and most everyone has to drive home after watching their kid play softball. There are "functional" drunks that can be well over the .08 limit and not feel the effects of alcohol as much as everyone else. They get in their car and get into an accident or get pulled over for a common driving infraction. The officer has them take a breath test and voila, you go to jail for drunk driving. I don't think anyone of us wants to go to jail, especially in front of our kids.
As far as the "make an ass out of themselves" comment, I have seen many parents that are "over the top" parents that can do that without the help of alcohol. Imagine what they might be like with the help of alcohol.

Maybe they'll STFU for once. I'm considering spiking the soft drinks of my pitcher's moms.

What would be even more fun to watch is if we were all sober and gave the red cups to our kids and let them play. Watching basketball and volleyball would be so much more fun.
