Communicating with College Coaches

What's on your mind?

by DaMann » Wed Oct 08, 2008 8:10 am

Once your DD has committed to a college (according to NCAA D1 guidelines), is she or the parents allowed to talk to the coaches when they show up at a showcase to watch her play?

The short answer would be yes you can talk to them after they are finished with the tournament. In addition to, if it is a different school than your NLI institution, you are still governed by all rules.

The long answer includes what is your definition of "committed". If she is verballed, all rules apply.

If it is after her NLI signing:
Sports Other Than Women's Basketball and Football.
In sports other than women's basketball and football, after the calendar day on which a prospective student-athlete signs a National Letter of Intent, there shall be no limit on the number of contacts by the institution with which the prospective student-athlete has signed. For an institution not using the National Letter of Intent in a particular sport, there shall be no limit on the number of contacts with the prospective student-athlete or the prospective student-athlete's relatives or legal guardians by that institution after the calendar day of the prospective student-athlete's signed acceptance of the institution's written offer of admission and/or financial aid. However, the following conditions continue to apply:

(a) Any contact at the prospective student-athlete's educational institution in men's basketball shall be confined to the permissible contact period and shall not exceed one visit per week;

(b) No in-person, on- or off-campus contact may be made during a "dead period;" (Revised: 1/10/92)

(c) No on- or off-campus contact (including correspondence and telephone calls) may be made by a representative of the institution's athletics interests except those involving permissible pre-enrollment activities (e.g., a discussion of summer employment arrangements); and

(d) Contact at the site of a prospective student-athlete's competition shall continue to be governed by the provisions of Bylaw 13.1.7.2. Note: contact with the prospective student-athlete's relatives or legal guardians at the site of the prospective student-athlete's competition shall be permitted (see Bylaw 13.1.7.2.2). (Revised: 1/10/92)

To add to 3Bsnag's post, Verbally Committed or not, the EXACT SAME RULES APPLY regarding communications with the coaches except for after the NLI is signed then the rules change a little.

Also, remember the rules are designed preventing the coaches from communicating with the athletes not neccessarily the other way around, so even though they cannot always communicate with the athlete, there are limited rules preventing the athletes from calling their future coaches. i.e. Coach shows up to watch their future athlete play their first game of a tournament and the rules say they cannot communicate with the athlete, however the athlete can call the coach and if they answer they can talk... :geek:

In theory the coach/parent cannot discuss DD with the college coach.

I would always say, when in doubt , err on the safe side versus risking costing a player a scholarship offer. No one would want to be the cause of an NCAA infraction or loss of scholarship to aplyer, so ther ei sno reason to risk it.

I would also say, it is preferred, people let the coaches watch the games versus distracting them to seeing all the players in a game by talking to them. In particular parents who may say something inadvertently or on purpose that jeopardizes a team mates chances or an opposing players. Parents can call or visit the college anytime to talk to a coach and thus that is the preferred manner to gain the info you need. Smoozing and promoting one's daughter to a college coach during the time they are trying to recruit, can raise red "parent" flags to the coaches.

That is the exact question I thought about the other night and looked up. Looked like tb coach/parent can not talk to college coach unless he/she is their scholastic coach too.

So, asst tb coach can talk to college coach about the head tb coach's kid and vice versa. Hmmm, I wonder who the first recruited and best 2 players are on that team? Surely college coaches can see through that bs pretty quick.

Nope, have to defer to another team representative:

13.1.6.4.1 Contact with Parent or Guardian Who Serves as Nonscholastic Coach.
In-person off-campus contact with a parent or legal guardian of a prospective student-athlete who serves on the staff of his or her daughter's nonscholastic team shall count as a contact, unless the parent or legal guardian also serves as a head coach of his or her daughter's scholastic team and the contact is unrelated to recruitment of his or her daughter. I agree with Andy. My post about calling the coach was directed to the Committed Athlete, not the parents, who has already verballed who's Future College Coach shows up to watch them play. That can be an awkward time because the kid does not always know the rules and the coach still cannot talk to them while their team is still in the tournament even though they have already verballed.

If it is before July 1 prior to the senior year, contact is not allowed off campus. They can only say hello.

Oct 1st of Senior year is fine. Anyone not in their senior year again after July 1st, can only talk to them in the following scenario's:

1- You call and they pick up the phone
2- You go to thier campus and talk to them.
3- You can send an email and they can only reply to the effect of "thank you for your interest in our school ... blah blah blah, please fill out our questionaire "

That's about it...

A d-1 coach our team met with at their campus stated it like that. She said you might think I'm a bi@#$ at the fields, but I cannot talk to you by rule. She was actually a great individual when we all talked on her turf.
