Private High Schools

What's on your mind?

by Finalscore » Wed Oct 29, 2008 3:24 pm

Looking for some advise from those who may have been down this road. My DD (12yrs old) is 1 1/2 years away from high school ,are there private high schools looking for athletes (3yrs of Travel softball/pitcher,SS, 2nd base can and will play any position) and will help pay for some or all of the tuition? Live in So. California, San Bernardino county will drive to LA. County , Orange County, Riverside County if it would be a good fit for DD. And could anybody give a ballpark figure of cost, in private Jr. high now($6,000yr) no sports offered at her school at this time. Grades are A's with occasional B's, mind and body are strong. THANKS FOR THE HELP !!!

Finalscore-PM me and I will get you in touch with a couple schools in the LA area. Sam is right about third base coach. DC is awesome. My dd does not go there and her school would be another good choice.

I was talking to friend of mine yesterday who has a dd that goes to Mater Dei. He is paying 10k (I don't think that included the books) when all is said and done. The school also says it does not give scholarships any more. They do however give grants that in some cases, an alumni (or many alumni's) will pay for. This same friends dd works in the cafeteria and has just been asked to work in the office, and money from that goes straight the their tuition.

I know another family that has a parent coaching a sport at a private school, and the kids tuition is probably 90% less then the normal tuition.

I'd be interested to really know how some athletes at these schools can afford to go and what discounts they get.

J Serra - amost 12K a year
Rancho Santa Margarita Catholic High School

Registered Catholic Family (First/Only Student)
One Annual Payment $9,950
Two Semi-Annual Payments. $4,975
Ten-Month Plan (Monthly) $995

That's if you are Catholic - add another 3 K if you are not....

My kid goes to a Catholic High School

Add another 200-300 for yearly mandatory fundraising
300-500 for books
200 - 300 for uniforms (hope they don't grow)
150 to participate in a sport
200 for the yearbook
200 family fee
300 a year Parent Hour Fee (you get back if you serve 20 hours of service in the school)

This is freshman year.....what's senior year going to cost????

oh, I will say...it's worth every dime....

The annual tuition at private high schools in LA County can be upwards of $26,000 - $30,000, but some schools (mostly Catholic) are as low as $6,000. One should not assume a strict correlation between tuition cost and quality. For example, Loyola High School (Catholic, boys only) is one of the premiere high schools in Southern California and their tuition is less than ($13,000). Notre Dame Academy, an excellent all girls Catholic school, only charges $10,000.

At the more selective private high schools, proven athletic ability may give the applicant an edge in terms of admission. There are no athletic scholarships per se. However, if a family can objectively demonstrate a need, the schools with large endowment funds may offer a grant to cover some portion of the tuition.

There are many considerations in choosing a private high school, and each family will weigh them differently. The school’s academic reputation, cost of tuition, driving distance, and perhaps religious affiliation are all important factors. For most parents (or so it seems) looking at private high schools, the matriculation list, i.e., where did the school’s recent graduates enroll for college, carries the most weight.

150 to participate in a sport...I've heard it can run in the thousands depending on the sport. Baseball- 3 grand. Could this be true ?
