Observations from the weekend...

Learned a couple of new things this weekend...

Pitchers may have the first two fingers taped from the end to the middle knuckle if they claim there is an injury. This is in contrast to what everyone thought was a rule that says pitchers cannot have any foreign substance on their hands when pitching...

In the midst of their windmill motion, pitchers may push off the rubber, plant and then push off a second time, provided the umpire judges that they are gaining no competitive advantage in the process.

Yes, we lost both of the games in these cases, but I was more interested to watch the drama develop as the crowd observed these two issues. There was no doubt about the tape, and there was definitely no doubt about the pitcher's double plant...

Well it is good that you learned something. if you take the time to look up the rule in regards to pitchers and tape on fingers, i dont see anywhere in there where it mentions an injury. So that would lead me to believe that an umpire has decided on their own that an injury must be claimed in order for there to be tape used, which would be wrong.

That is correct and what I was splaining in the rules forum. Nothing in the rule or case book mentions injury. I wasnt aware he had 2 threads on this same issue.

It also does not say anything about the color of the tape, but if you use white tape you will invariably have some umpire point to a different section of the book and mention the pitcher cant have anything that distracts the batter. So even though that little piece of tape will have ZERO interference with the batter, that would be a judgment call. So if the ump wants the tape gone, he will get it gone, so make sure you have skin,flesh tone colored tape in the bag to use, this way when blue tries to get it removed, you politely ask to see the UIC.

UIC are never any help. Most of the time they back up the umpires. Just do what the umpire says and complain to your friends and hey bucket later.

UICs are plenty of help, but you need to know what they can or cant help on. if it is judgment, you are wasting your time. But if an umpire is not properly applying a rule, then get a UIC. i would not do this on Saturdays unless it was really important to you. Let it go, then go find the UIC and ask for some guidance. In reality you are making sure this misinformed umpire gets an education about a rule.


Start playing with the DP/Flex rule for some good fun with new umpires. better than a playstation3 game:)
