Cal State Fullerton has received nearly 63,000 applications for admission for fall 2013, the most ever, officials said Friday.

The campus, with an enrollment of 37,677, received about 9 percent more applications than in fall 2012, when 57,556 students applied. Freshman applications made up 40,050, while 22,896 transfer students applied.

The 23-campus California State University system also received a record 763,654 applications for fall 2013, a 12 percent increase compared with the previous year. The submissions came from 294,926 distinct applicants, versus 268,683 last year. Students typically apply to multiple CSU campuses. The application totals are for Oct. 1 through Nov. 30, the priority period for all 23 CSU campuses.

Fullerton's fall 2012 enrollment is the largest among all CSU campuses. The school ranked third in applicants for the upcoming fall. Cal State Long Beach had 80,622 applicants, while San Diego State received 74,243.

The record numbers come after the system essentially closed admission for new students for spring 2013 because of ongoing budget cuts. Most campuses aren't admitting any students for the spring. Fullerton will admit just a couple of hundred this spring, officials said.

"The public demand for higher education has never been greater, yet the university struggles to meet that demand in a climate of unreliable state funding," said Nathan Evans, the system's director of enrollment.

Passage of Proposition 30 in November prevented a $250 million trigger cut to the 400,000-student system and pumped an extra $125 million into the system as part of a deal Gov. Jerry Brown made to prevent tuition increases.

The deal will allow CSU to rescind a 9 percent tuition increase planned for this year. Annual tuition is $5,472.

CSU officials also attribute the raise in applications to a higher overall rate of college-ready students. Also, the cost of a CSU education remains a top value when compared with what other four-year universities charge, Evans said.

The freshman acceptance rate at Fullerton for fall 2012 was 47 percent. Systemwide, it was 52 percent. For transfer students, Fullerton accepted 45 percent of applicants, while the CSU system accepted 48 percent.

In 2012, Fullerton denied admission to more than 10,000 qualified students in fall 2012, while CSU denied admission to about 190,000 qualified students. It's still unclear how many admission spots will be available for the fall, Evans said.

I have a few friends that have kids going to the CSU schools and they have a difficult time getting classes. The only students getting all their classes are athletes, high academically admitted students, and students working on campus because they get priority registration.

That has been the case for many years at SDSU. The odds of graduating in 4 years is pretty low for the typical student.

Tuition is only $5500 and you actuall see little liberal mush heads protesting about how expensive college is and it just isn't fair.

Out of state students actually help subsidize the in-state students- It is a move common to most larger state schools. California and NY (SUNY) have been able to avoid this due to large state funding and tax base. Vermont uses out of state students as a way of mainting a larger University than the in-state population would support- West Virginia I believe does the same thing

What you get is a degree. What the value of a degree is today depends on many different factors.

I make a distinction between a college education and a college degree. I think your comment goes towards the education, and in that sense I agree.
