Audrey Altstadt, professor of history at UMass Amherst, said the Chechens’ “main fight is against the Russians,” with roots in Russian occupation dating back 150 years ago.

“Since then, there has been an on-and-off guerrilla war against the Russians,” said Altstadt. “I don’t see that there is any direct causal relationship in this attack. The Chechens have defined the Russians as their enemies, but not Westerners.”

However, Sergei Millian, president of the Russian-American Chamber of Commerce, said the conflict resulted in a dangerous, lost generation of Chechen youth.

“When they were young, they were probably influenced by radical Islam,” Millian said. “It’s an international problem where a generation of people have been influenced by radicals and can be brainwashed. I think Chechen terrorism is no longer a Russian domestic problem.”

In recent years, would-be Chechen terrorists have faced charges in Denmark, France and Spain.

Well since they chose not to mirandize him he has no lawyer and no right to remain silent. That decision will probably come back to haunt the prosecution
