2009 ASA Code Changes and Comments – December 5, 2008

What's on your mind?

by Intel » Sat Dec 06, 2008 1:37 am

Am I understanding this change correctly?? So Cal goes from 3 National Berths to 12!!

Article Number Change
Article 516 G NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS. The following teams are eligible for
National Championship Final competition as follows:

F. Girls’ Class A USA / ASA Fast Pitch National Championship Finals.
18, 16, 14, 12, 10-Under

All remains the same except Association berths and that change is:
Associations registering 201 – 999 teams receives one ( 1 ) berth, for
associations above 999 teams, those associations will receive an
additional berth for each increment of 500 team registrations. As an
example, an association that registers 2900 teams would receive 5
total berths. The best way to determine the berths is to take total
registered teams and divide by 500 – the number of berths is the
whole number – no rounding up.

Comments: To allow association’s berths to be a representation of teams registered.

If true, this is a MAJOR change. I'm not sure I'm understanding this - I need someone like Sam who really understands this stuff to explain this to me.

There are no "berths" for SP. Any team which participates in Championship Play can advance.

It applies to JO.

As explained, every local association receives one berth up to 999 teams (assuming they have registered more than 200). Once the association hits 1000 teams, you begin adding a berth for every 500 teams registered.

Many had believed that a new berth became available for passing the 500 number (i.e. 500=1 berth and 501 added a 2nd). The change is add a berth for every block of 500 teams registered, not simply for "breaking into" the next block of 500. The formula in OP (bold) is the best method of determining berths, just remember an fraction of the number is dropped.

Hey...ASA is becoming Triple Crown....way too many berths....they could make it a minimum of one berth up to 2000 + 14 National Qualifiers, and give the remaining berths, up to a grand total of 120, to the Regions.

I know for a fact that there are not 3100 16u teams in Indiana. There might be 100 16u teams tops.

ASA registration is for all ASA registered teams in that association. That includes, recreation, B and A.

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S SLOW PITCH
Article 516 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS. The following teams are eligible for
National Championship Final competition as follows:
ASA East / West National Championship Finals. The ASA will
conduct two ( 2 ) National Championship Tournaments in following
divisions and classifications:
01. Men’s Class B Slow Pitch.
01. Women’s Class C and D Slow Pitch.
One championship will be played in each of the two ( 2 ) sections in
accordance with Article 204, Sections of this Code.
a. Berths. Berths into these National Championships will be based on
the following
:
All Men’s Class B, C and D and Women’s Class C and D berths are
based on adult team registrations from the previous year as follows:
Men’s Women’s
Host Teams 4 Host Teams 4
0 - 500 6 0 - 100 6
501 - 1,000 10 101 - 200 10
1,001 - 2,000 12 201 - 400 12
Over 2,000 14 Over 400 14
Each Region 4 Each Region 4
b. Qualifying. Teams will qualify for these National Championship
Finals through their local associations. Local Associations shall
establish guidelines for the process teams may earn a berth into
these National Championships. Local associations and
regions may combine berths to qualify teams for these tournaments
in accordance with Article 516 ( A )( 05 ) of this Code. Teams
may play in their closest National Championship.

What berths are they talking about here?

The ones that are on paper and totally ignored. No local association is going to tell a team which participated in their tournaments that they cannot go if they would like to go. The hosts will not turn a team away.

The discussion was the affect the code change would have on FP. There is no affect on SP. But you are right, there are "berths". My bad if you thought I was trying to mislead anyone.

Spazdad:

It appears that SoCal get 12 berths. It also appears their are now a possible 230 teams at each national. A second discussion would be does this water down ASA Nationals?

I've also heard discussion of what will it do to the Western Nats, which have gotten to be a pretty good event.

So cal is such a unique area with such an influential commissioner, its going to be very difficult to implement any changes intended to benefit every one which would not SIGNIFICANTLY benefit So Cal. Any bone given one area will be a mountain of bones for So Cal.

Another Code Change:

Pool play now counts, I would guess most of you support this change.
