Metal Cleats????

What's on your mind?

by It's me! » Mon Dec 15, 2008 9:54 pm

DD is a freshman who wants metal cleats. Not sure if I should? Any thoughts, pros and cons would greatly be appreciated.

Get them for her. Ask any college player is she would ever want to wear molded spikes again? I know mine loved metal when she got to college. After she graduated she used molded in a coed slow pitch league. She said she felt like she was on ice.

Absolutely get them! There is also research that a large percentage of leg/ankle injuries are attributed to the non-metal cleat. DD got Nike with removable spikes (came with both metal and non) and just switches after HS season, she LOVES the metal and can't wait for the season to start to put them on!

Plus, you can just buy the non-metal spikes after they wear down mid-season, save some money...

I have a feeling my DD will also love them when she starts playing freshman ball in the spring. She's an OF with a 3.0 home to first time. Wondering how many tenths will be shaved off.

My DD is also an outfielder. She put on metal cleats for HS for the 1st time last year. She loves them, but it takes some time to get used to them. Have your DD spend some time in the cleats in the outfield before the first game, ideally at practice, etc. Also, the cleats do NOT improve H-1st time...sorry.

They like the "click-clack" more then anything. Your DD will love them and will never want to switch back.

If a school has turf, they ban metal cleats. If a coach makes a sub, you cant wait for her to run to her bag and change shoes. Luckily its mainly the private schools that have turf due to the high cost.

Different topic for another thread, but turf fields actually are cheaper in the long-run due to maintaince, utilities, etc.

They love that sound. Also, my DD hates the molded cleats in summer ball. No difference in speed in either.
