During one game he pulled his outfielders in within 10 feet of the imaginary baseline when a slapper came up. He had 9 infielders. The umpires told him to back them up, he refused and eventually pulled his players off.

I'm betting that isn't against any rule. Doesn't surprise me if it was SD umpires...mostly ex or current military that like to take charge and don't know the rules.

He did the same thing against us at a friendly in Riverside.
0-1 game and the umpire told him he could not position his team that way. (they had been doing it all game long but for some reason during the 4th inning the umpire decided he couldn't do that) Our team didn't have a problem with it but the umpire suddenly did.
Dodd refused to reposition his outfielders so the umpire started calling illegal pitches on his pitcher.
After more arguments he then pulled his team off the field and left.

I don't think it's against the rules to play all of your fielders on the infield but an umpire would have to chime in on that one.

I don't have a rule book in front of me. But years ago when I coached my daughters 8u allstar team, we were playing on a Varsity baseball field, I had my outfielders on the dirt were I believed they would have been positioned if we were on a standard 8u softball field. The umpire told me they needed to be on the grass, he said it was a rule. I argued the infield was cut to deep for our age group, after a few rounds he allowed it. So maybe it is a rule.

There must be some ruling against more than 6 infielders. I've heard umpires tell the outfielders they must be at least 10 feet behind an imaginary line between the bases. I know a team had an illegal pitch called on them because the centerfielder charged within this distance before the release of the pitch. Otherwise, every team would jam up the infield with every lefty slapper. Give TD some credit for trying it and maybe it wasn't a rule back when mullets were in style but no need to pull your team off the field.

Yeah? Well if that's the case I sure wish the umpires would allow it.

In order for an IP to be called, a defensive player would have to be positioned in foul territory when the pitch is made.

The rule book requires only that the players be in fair territory and not blocking the batter's view of the pitch.

I would have expected better from Riverside umpires.

The catcher has to be in their position and the pitcher has to be touching the rubber, but the other 7 players can be anywhere.

That is what I thought but it was the umpires call. I think he was a rec ball umpire. I know that many rec leagues modify the rules to state that outfielders must start on the grass.

Bet thats what happened - i have seen rec blues make modifications like that before - specially one that could affect inexperienced kids safety so much.
