What ever will wii do?

What's on your mind?

by DonnieS » Tue Dec 23, 2008 4:16 pm

Up to ten people a week are being hospitalized with injuries caused by playing Nintendo Wii games, prompting doctors in Britain to issue warnings of the dangers associated with the video game system.

"There has been a 100 percent increase in patients complaining of Wii-itis," Dr. Dev Mukerjee of Broomfield Hospital, Essex, told The Sun newspaper.

Most patients are admitted after playing tennis or running games which involve sudden movements, resulting in tendon stretching or tearing.

"It's possible Wii-itis may lead to rheumatism or arthritis later in life. Patients often have inflamation of the shoulder or wrist," said Dr. Mukerjee.

Another common injury is dubbed Wii-knee, blamed on the bending of the knee from the Wii-Fit game. This involves a special platform and a series of movements ranging from yoga to strength-training moves.

In extreme cases, the kneecap can be dislocated or pop out of joint.

Doctors treat Wii-knee with cortisone injections, icing, and anti-inflammatory painkillers. Treatment can last for three months.

So, what to do?

Make people take a physical before playing their games, to ensure that they aren't gonna hurt themselves doing a little exercise for a change?

My kids wanted one for Christmas, when they are outside in the batting cage they are always fighting over some game that they are playing, why would I want to bring that in the house. Now I can use this as a good excuse of why they did not get one.

Come to think of it, I think I may be getting carpo-tunnel (however you spell that) from Guitar Hero 8-)

Is there a class-action suit yet that I can join?

I guess it's a good thing none of those people have tried DanceDance Revolution yet, I predict multiple heart attacks, not to mention sore and pulled muscles.

Seriously, IMHO, if a kid hurts themself playing their Wii, then, except in very rare cases where they may kick a piece of furniture or something, I don't feel that the Wii is to blame. Heck, if an adult hurts themself playing Tennis or something similar on the Wii, then there is quite possibly a bigger problem. Again, IMHO.

It's the Brit's. When have they produced a real good athlete? They should worry about a more pressing concern-a new national dental program; have you seen their teeth lately? Guitar Hero will hook you after 10 minutes so give it a try. Merry Christmas to all, that's right, if I offend you with that statement then so sorry. :)

I know Rock Band 2 for PS3 is extremely addictive! I think I pulled a tendon in my elbow from those freaking drums! But man is it fun! :D

Merry Christmas all!

Wii sucks anyway. The graphics are sub par. If you're going to spend that much money,
spend the extra couple hun and go Xbox 360 or PS3.

I'm with Jofus on this. I can't see how anyone could injure themselves playing Wii. Now, when they invent a game called "throw down to 2nd", I may revise my feelings on this.
