It was CR and they definitely knew the rule and had it all set up.
The umpire went out and started making the pitcher take the pitcher take it off and coach about hatched kittens. Started yelling to call the UIC, that this was an injury and that tape wasn't coming off...
Sorry I am about a month late as I havent been to Heybucket but a few times and have not joined until I saw this thread. It was my team and my pitcher being discussed and I find this whole thing rather funny. Ill start off by saying that the above description of events simply did not happen. I did yell at the blue to get a UIC but it had NOTHING to do with the tape and had to do with the umpire not knowing a substitution rule.
So for the person that felt I had this whole thing planned, and the pitcher was faking injury and that evil CR had this whole thing planned in advance with the UIC so that 13 year old pitcher could get some extra spin on her finger by faking an injury so she could tape her finger, so we could go out an beat a young team that we should have easily beaten no matter who was pitching here is what really happened.
This was our THIRD game of the evening, not our 1st as was described earlier. In our 1st game, the above mentioned pitcher was pitching and the blue went out to her to discuss her tape, of which I didnt even know she was wearing. Blue makes her remove the tape. I knew she could have it, but I let it go as I simply didnt feel the need to make an issue of this at this particular time. Immediately AFTER the game, I approached the blue with the rule book to show him why I felt he had incorrectly applied the rule. Of course he immediately went into defensive mode and basically told me to get the .... away from him with the book. So at that point I went to get clarification on this rule from the UIC who expressly told me my pitcher could have the tape on her finger, but to just make sure it was flesh colored. So after reading the rule and discussing the rule with the UIC I was 100% sure of the exact rule as we went into the game being discussed above.
The home blue in this particular game is a real a.. IMO. So when this blue goes out to talk to my pitchers for any reason, I get out there quick to head him off. I do not want umpires talking to my young players. If there is a problem, I want them telling me, and I will deal with the player/problem. I immediately asked him what the problem was and he said he was simply asking her if she was injured. I just made sure he knew the tape was not coming off and then I walked away..... end of discussion, and last time I heard about the tape....... until this thread.
There was no evil plan so my pitcher could dominate against what appeared to be a 12u team. There was no evil conspiracy with me and an umpire(the best part of this story for sure). I certainly didnt have this pitcher fake an injury as I didnt even know she had tape on her finger earlier in the day. I certainly dont live through my daughter, as I dont have a daughter on the team.
What there was, was a player that had a blister on her index finger and a coach that makes it part of his duty to know all of the rules that will impact his team, and when an umpire or ill informed parents on the imposing team try to make issues out of things they do not understand, I make sure I try to do things that will help my team.
So now that you actually know that no rules were being broken, please go back to all of your parents that were so upset that this coach was doing illegal activity to win a 14u game, and explain to them that just maybe nothing sinister was happening. Maybe the kid actually had a blister, maybe tape is allowed on a pitchers finger(even if no injury exists) and just maybe take that game as a lesson, that maybe some coaches should go out of their way to understand the ASA rule book. In turn they will become better coaches, and their players wil become better players, which will result in the team being a better team.
