Tips for hitting the "rise ball..."

What's on your mind?

by jag1 » Tue Jan 06, 2009 4:24 pm

here in the mid-west as a first year 16u team, we are seeing pitchers who can really move it up through the zone for the first time..! I was interested in some tips/pointers on how to teach kids to hit a riser and what drills you do in preparation to play against rise-ball pitchers...? thanks, JG..

Wait for another pitch
It's better to keep your mouth shut and look like you're stupid......
than to open it and remove all doubt.

A good rise ball is not a strike....DON'T SWING........Make them bring a different pitch somewhere closer to the zone!

Depending on the pitcher and how good she is the best way to hit a good riser is to close your eye swing as hard as you can and swing 12"s above the ball

Hey #1,

Let me know your earliest available date and I'll invite you out to my practice to work with my girls on this technique.....I think it's better than what they are currently using!

Move all the way to the back of the batters box. It does two main things......1) it gives the batter more time to recognize the rise and 2) it really messes with the catcher. The catcher will have to back up which causes the pitcher to have to try and adjust her pitch. Many times I've seen the rise suddenly become less effective. Please understand this is in conjuntion with waiting for another pitch because if the batter can keep from swinging it will be a ball.

Most rise balls are not strikes. I join the chorus in wondering why you would want them to swing at that.

The key to rise is teaching them to identify it so they dont swing at it. Easier said than done.

That said, some of the most crushing shots I've ever seen were when someone accidentally got a hold of a rise ball. Usually the catcher and I may chuckle about it a little as the girls from the other side are lining up to high five the girl when shes done jogging her bases.

I dont know if hitting that can be taught though... I leave that to the experts to weigh in on. From my perspective of watching many a good rise ball waste many a good batter - I stand by the fact that if you teach them not to swing at it, you will do much better on average than somehow teaching someone how to hit a rise ball.

Which then makes you vulnerable to the curve. As far as the rise goes, "If it looks high..... It's high!"
"A parent's only as good as their dumbest kid. If one wins a Nobel Prize but the other gets robbed by a hooker, you failed."

Hey, heres my worstest rise ball story.. Mens FP. The pitcher was doubtless one of the paid A pitchers, he was very good.

Throwing this ball about 70+ miles an hour what looked like a few inches off the ground and it would rise at the plate. Some times it would rise enough, sometimes it wouldnt, and apparently sometimes I wasnt good enough at guessing what the heck this unbelievable pitch was doing. Its not like anyone could see it anyway. Least of all the batters, lord knows they couldnt hit it.

Oh the pitcher and catcher were riding my ass "Blue that one was a rise ball, you have got to stay with that one all the way in "You call it where it crosses the plate blue" etc etc etc.

On the ones that seemed/sounded/guessed to be like strikes, or at least resembled a potential strike. I'd get it from the batters. "Blue that was in the dirt" "how could you call that a strike" or the ole.. just stand there and stare at me.

What the heck? I had never seen a rise ball like that before. This was not a fair pitch :)

I suppose the moral to the story is not all rise balls are thrown to be high. Sometimes they are throw to be strikes.. Or maybe I just have been waiting for an opportunity to tell that lame story :)
