Alrighty then! Nothin like facing a pitcher who throws 70+ rise balls at head level. It's a blast trying to hit!

70+ Riseballs? Are we talking about the women's game?

Recognition between a high (at the top of the strike zone) fastball and a riser that is just out of the strikezone is really hard to lay off.....are there any pitching mechanics that a hitter might be able to look for when a pitcher throws the rise...? I know I'm grasping straws here, but the riser seems to really be holding us back..! thanks, JG..

If ChinMusic is a woman ... and that's her picture ... I don't want to play that game ...

Chin I really want to be a "bleacher parent" at a game that features a 15 yr old girl throwing 75 mph rise balls. Your post is so much more helpful to the OP... great job!!

The catcher will have to back up which causes the pitcher to have to try and adjust her pitch. Many times I've seen the rise suddenly become less effective. Please understand this is in conjuntion with waiting for another pitch because if the batter can keep from swinging it will be a ball.

The back of the box is the last place you want to be with most rise ball pitchers. You need to try to put the hurt on the ball way out in front of the plate

A good rise ball starts up long before it gets to the plate and it is usually nearly as fast as the fastball. Up in the box just gets you smoked. A good rise ball pitcher will also have a couple of other good pitches. If the batter backs up for the rise. The 1st pitch is a rise on her hands, then when she backs up -down & out. If she starts in the back, P throws a 1st pitch strike low on the outside corner. Which is why the rise ball is such an effective pitch it sets the batter up nicely. Try to teach them not to swing...good luck ;)

Have you played Fastpitch and how many good rise ball pitchers have you faced?
The farther back in the box the harder it is to hit it. I don't think all catchers or all coaches call the same pitch sequence.

Uno,
When did this become a players board? - as a coach I've called a few pitches - as a "bleacher parent" I've abused enough umpires/coaches to be an unimpeachable expert. But I didn't have to be in the box to know my pitcher got the out with this sequence many, many more times than she was hit. I realize it is only circumstantial evidence but since I am too old and don't have pretty enough legs like you and Chin I'll just have to rely on what I see. A batter that swings at rise balls usually walks back to the dugout while the 3rd base coach is sawing his hand back and forth in front of his eyebrows.
