Question about ASA insurance

What's on your mind?

by jofus » Tue Feb 12, 2008 6:31 am

My DD's coach from last year told me last night that starting this year, in addition to team insurance, ASA is requiring individual insurance on each player, and it doesn't matter if that player is insured already or not (under their parents insurance).

The story he was told was that a girl playing on a different team from her normal team got hurt, and the team's insurance wouldn't cover it because she wasn't on their roster, and her team's insurance wouldn't pay because she wasn't playing for them when it happened (sounds like typical insurance companies to me).

Anyone know what the real story is?

Edit>>Another question (I'm a noob, I didn't mess with this stuff last year on our team)....you don't HAVE to be insured through the company on the ASA site, do you? I noticed USSSA had a different company linked for insurance (maybe more than one, I don't remember)....one policy covers you no matter if you are playing a USSSA tournament, ASA, NSA, or whatever, right?

That was the worry I always had about the insurance that is offered through ASA and having to be on an ASA roster. Because of that I went with the insurance offered through USFA and/or USSSA. This insurance is per team and is the typical supplemental to your primary coverage - but does not require a roster. We have not had a claim yet, the injuries that have occurred have been to kids whose folks already had 100% coverage or like us , carry an accidental injury rider on our regular policy. But I have heard of families that had injuries and the claims were handled and paid promptly through this insurance.

Not true. The individual insurance IS the team insurance. If all of your individuals are registered individually (and therefore insured by Bollinger), your team is insured. There is no need for extra team insurance. They will all get ID cards from VTD. We have been doing this for a few years here in SoCal.

What a number of people may not realize is that ASA sells insurance in two fashions. Team Insurance and Individual Insurance. Usually a ASA JO commisioner in your area has strong feelings towards one or the other, and wants everyone in thier area to get the same insurance.

As Sam points out, even when you buy individual insurance your team is covered.

It is important to get insurance that is compatible with everyone else in your area is getting. If you have Team insurance and all the others in your area have individual insurance, then you are going to make things difficult.

Most of the areas that have a lot of teams, and lot of players tend to get the individual insurance. This allows girls to pickup for other teams. It also gives you an I.D. card that can be used as proof of age at any major travel tournament and is a must for ASA HOF, RNQ, NQ's and Nationals.

I know some coaches who think that by getting Team Insurance they will keep a girl from picking up for other teams. But, insurance is likely to be a minor hold on a player.

Our team is based in Maryland. My daughter was injured in a tournament in North Carolina. We have the Bollinger Insurance with the personal ID cards. We were told this was a very good policy and that they would cover what my personal insurance policy wouldn't. Well, my policy didn't cover the X-rays and neither did Bollinger. Does anyone know much about insurance and what may or may not be covered?

ASA Individual Registration comes with insurance. If you don't want the insurance, the rate will not go down, but you can attain additional coverage.

The insurance from Bollinger is supplimental.

There is NOTHING in the ASA Code requiring a player to carry insurance, though common sense should support the value of proper coverage.

Questions involving coverage should be addressed to Bollinger's office in Short Hills, NJ.

ASA at the National level does not require insurance. At many local levels where ASA games are played, the orginization that owns the fields often require proof of insurance. So local associations often require that you purchase insurance.

So, I could get insurance through USSSA for example (not them, but whoever they link on their website), and our team would be covered whether we were playing in a USSSA tournament, or ASA, NSA, Softball Nation, etc., right?

Yes, where you are playing doesnt matter. Read through the documents - they arent hard to read - there were several options when I bought this last year. But you are covered at practice and at games - some though I dont have it in front of me, cover you while going back and forth to games. I dont remember if the one from USSSA or USFA covers that anymore. The liability policy was being sold separate - so be sure you get both covered.

This type of insurance tends to be suplemental and tends to cover the child regardless of where they are playing/practicing.

Agian the problem on the local level could be that your local ASA tournament directors life is much easier if can turn in one set of insurance. Having insurance from a different providers may make his job more difficult. Some tournaments have been requesting that you bring proof of insurance. ASA travel permit can provide similar proof, so ASA tends to be a bit easier if you play mostly ASA tournaments.
