They do not get ANYTHING ? .........No Hotels paid, No travel expenses ..NOTHING....and they do not have a kid on the team.

OK....so then the key word is salary.
We have similar programs here.
Certain indoor facilities start teams and offer their players clinics, that have to be paid for. Of course they don't call them mandatory....but it's pretty well understood that if you don't attend, your spot is not guarenteed.
