I made a general post on this topic on page 2 but I'll throw my 2 cents in now on high school ball in our community. I've read many posts on this site and know several people have a totally different perspective than I. In our small community, school ball is a big deal. We have a paper that comes out once a week and it has a tremendous sports sections all based upon the high school teams. I've noticed that a lot of you discuss concepts like "gold teams." Heck, we don't have any gold teams around here. Our kids do however, produce in athetics. I've been the baseball coach here for some time and have averaged 92% of my seniors get scholarships. The majority have never played travel ball. Many to D-I programs. Our softball team has also done well despite the fact that the sophomore class this year will be the first one comprised of travelball players. Of our last 4 HS pitchers, 3 are pitching at D-I schools. Our HS team is currently ranked in the state coaches association pre season poll as 11th.
My dd is a freshman and will tryout along with 43 other girls for 22 total spots. She has worked very hard, hits and pitches every night and lifts every other day. We're hoping that her hard work will pay off. Good luck to everyone that has a child trying out. Our tryouts are February 25. As we say around here, "The Hay is in the Barn." Tryouts in 11 days.

Dave would have liked to have had her (I think). We will playing his school March 4. My best friend is his assistant. I also count Dave as good friend and great guy to hang out with. I am glad he is now living near me.

The kids normally have a great time playing with their classmates and friends...its the parents who have the problems.
Just tell her to close her ears and nod when the HS coach tells her to do anything....unless she plays for Doug Meyers or Dave Clark.
Our coach at one time played for the Firecrackers and is doing great. She is not interested in changing a player that is seeing a coach unless it is to reinforce something that coach would be telling them anyway. Does not talk with the parents and makes sure the kids understand what their role is on the team. If you don't like it...leave.
I can't wait for the season to get started. I too get to hang out with friends that I don't get to see anymore from the rec days and it is very relaxing and fun.

We've got a couple years til High School, but my daughter is playing Little League because she wants to play with her classmates/friends, so I can agree with the social aspect of HS ball.
Now if I can just find her a travel team to play on that is somewhat close so I don't have to try to start one myself
Although, there are no good ones in her age group in our area, so our HS team is going to be hurting in a few years when the majority of the girls coming in are behind other schools where the girls have been playing 100 games a year together for the last several years. There is a need for a solid team in our area, for sure.....
Oh, and the rumor I hear is that our local HS coach is only keeping 16 players (varsity and JV total) because parents were complaining about lack of playing time last year

That has got to be a rumor. There is no way. And if the coach listens to the parents that program is in bigger trouble than having no tb players.

I envy you all. Our new coach supposed to be a great coach...of another sport. Apparently she never has even played softball. We also graduated a catcher, the only catcher, last year. Sigh... In speaking with the AD today about my two pitching to and catching each other and taking turns on the mound( one is a committed 18G and the other is a promising 18U freshman) his response was "You mean to tell me nobody is developing a 3rd pitcher?!! What if they get hurt? Who will pitch?" What do you say to that softball fans? A quiet sigh was all I could manage. Whoo hooo! Bring it on!

I would like to know what part of the country you live, and where your kids are going to D-1 softball programs without playing travel ball. I know some kids in California, Texas, Georgia, and Florida that will play anywhere.
I agree that boys playing baseball can still get recruited out of high school without playing on a top select team. Pitchers especially, and especially if they are 6' 4" or better. But if a boy is throwing 85-90 mph, or better yet 90+, he can get recruited by a D-1 program even if he can't throw alot of strikes. The accepted rule in baseball is you can teach a kid control (not command), but your can't teach 90+ velocity.
Don't kid yourself. The same rules don't apply in softball. No one should leave with the impression that high school has anything to do with getting recruited except imaybe in a very few isolated parts of the country.

Hello cannonball here the question in california softball players have to play HS to be recruited or is a posibility to get recruited if you play HS
I
was thinking the only way to get recruited is if play travell ball.-
