Was talking to a friend at my daughter's alumni game this weekend. He had mentioned a number of his players that had issues with coaches once they went away to college. The one that really stood out was the Coach from the University of Rhode Island. This struck home, we had met with this coach on a number of occasions and my daughter was actively recruited by her. URI was my daughter's first college softball "camp" and also her first interview. URI was never high on her list, but its close proximity to a second home of ours made it an ideal place for a "test drive" If you are going to make mistakes in an interview or camp, might as well be low on the list. Coach Layton was great. Once hearing it was my daughters first interview, she took a lot of time explaining the process, what to expect, what kind of travel teams to play for etc... A year later my daughter got a call from the coach- they were interested, she went and saw her and had a good meeting- the coach invited my daughter to attend a Providence vs URI fall game. We went to the game(horrible softball) my daughter said to me during the game(based on the students around here) "I don't want to go here" After the game we thanked the coach and my daughter sent a thank-you note thanking the coach for her interest, but that my daughter was looking elsewhere- she got a nice note back from the coach. The following year I saw the coach at the CT Tradition Showcase(my DD had already committed) The coach asked about her, was happy she found a place. I thanked the coach for all her help. End of story. My friend this Saturday said look it up- so I did. Just goes to show.
