Phil Keaggy is the best guitarist you have never heard of. He's considered to be one of the best finger-style guitarists in the world - but you never hear about him because he is a Christian and releases music only to that market. He has released a bunch of instrumental CDs through the years, if you're not into the Christian message. The most popular being Beyond Nature, but I also have Master & The Musician, Acoustic Sketches, 220 (really rocking electric guitar), and a few others I can't remember right now. You will likely have to go online to order the CDs from Amazon or something. I can't even find his CDs in Christian bookstores.
I saw Phil perform solo once. At first I thought he was performing to some kind of backing track because it sounded like this one guy was an entire band. He has something in front of him that looked like a keyboard with a bunch of pedals under it. It took me a while to figure this out, but what I discovered was that he was playing a lick on the guitar, recording it on the spot, and playing it back in a loop. Then he would "drum" on the guitar body and loop that back as percussion. But this was so seamless and integrated into the performance that you didn't really notice what he was doing. At one point he sang into the guitar pickup, looped that as background vocals, and kept playing the song all in time and in melody! It was just incredible to watch.
