Bringing toilet paper is a great idea. My DD graduated from college last year and I still have toilet paper in the car. I can't remember how many times I was the hero over the years because I always had toilet paper in the car.
My DD learned some very valuable lessons from softball.
How to manage your time so that you still get good grades and can participate in all of the other functions you want to be involved in.
How to deal with flight changes, checking in at airports and flying on your own.
How to check in and out at hotels and how to deal with room problems
Learning that working hard is important but also that life isn't fair.
Learning how to make decisions
How to deal with drama
How to deal with difficult people
How to deal with difficult bosses or coaches.
You don't always win but losing makes the winning sweet
Having a job and doing it well
Working as a group to achieve common goals
A scholarship isn't everything. It is great to have but not the only deciding factor.
Learning how to live on your own and solving your own problems is extremely satisfying
Dad can't fix everything (Particularly painful for me)
Realizing that while you have grown up many of your old friends still haven't
You can't bat your eyes, smile and then cry your way out of every speeding ticket
Prioritizing your life so that you can accomplish things beyond softball. Whether it be attending a dance, a friends birthday party, a camping trip or just a trip to the store.
Softball isn't life but it mirrors life.
Finally, learning at some point that there is life after softball.
And the thousands of things that these kids learn at a young age that prepares them for their future that so many others learn much later in life.
Like learning that the softball teams GPA is higher than the average student body GPA. Why? They learned so much about time management, using your time wisely, studying when you can and working together.
Discovering that playing sports in High School and College while still carrying a high GPA really impresses people in the real world and opens doors that are closed for others.
Things I learned? Way too many to list but just a couple.
Sometimes I took it way too seriously.
God it was fun
Realizing that our kids are way better off for having put in all this effort.
Knowing that the wisest decision I ever made was to let someone else coach her.
Letting her make the decisions and learning to live with them.
Finally learning to keep my mouth shut.
Oh and maxing out all my credit cards so that I could travel with the college team and meet great people doing the same thing and watch my DD play or sometimes not play.
How fortunate I was to be able to spend so much time with my children and how much I now enjoy them as adults.
Laughing when they now ask me if I will coach my grandchildren (If I ever get any) and if I will be wise enough to turn them loose if I do coach them.
Wonder if I will be able to remember when to shut up.
