College Coaching Salaries

I was when negotiating terms when I was straight out of college and going into coaching and someone told me that if I want to make money, I should choose another occupation besides coaching. With the exception of a few coaches in the country, MOST coaches work endless hours because they love the game, care for the kids, and have pride in the results of their work.

In the 13 years that I coached college ball - as a Head and an Assistant mostly at the Division 1 top 40 level - 11 of those years my salary was below $50,000. Seven of those years were below $30,000.

Coaches love the game and the kids. That is why we coach.

Sara: As most of your time was spent a D1 as the HC, were you permitted to earn/raise additinal compensation thru clinics, instruction, coaching outside of the season, speaking,etc ?...any deals with clothing?

The majority of us in the working world better enjoy what we do as we certainly are not overpaid and underworked.

Good question.

As an assistant, I did do some clinics but they were limited by the time demands of coaching. As a Head Coach, I needed an incentive to be able to hire strong staff so I tried to help them through the camps and clinics. I was never given any monies for clothing.

Again. I think the point to remember is the effort that these coaches are putting in, mostly so that the student-athletes can have exceptional experiences.

I just find it hard to believe that a head softball coach at a Div. I school is making $30-40k total package. It may be $30-40k for the coaching job, but then another $10-20k to teach a class or two, more for the additional position in the athletic department (assistant compliance officer, academic counselor, assistant athletic director, etc.), and camps, clinics, etc. I just find it hard to believe, but . . . .does anyone really know?

Head Coach - Women's Softball Salaries according to Chronicle of Higher Education 07-08:

(1) Average of all levels: $45,328;
(2) average at Doctoral granting universities, which would be most major Div. I: $60,087;
(3) average at Master granting institutions, which would be comparable to Div. II; $42,785;
(4) average at BA granting universities; $41,350, and
(5) average at 2-year colleges: $44,355

This does not include "other" income from teaching, camps, etc.

This past summer, I had a California JC coach tell me she was making about $82,000 annually. This included some salary for substitute teaching. I found it difficult to believe, but I had no reason to doubt her.

My DD's junior college coach is also a teacher/professor at her school, has been there almost 20 years, so my guess is that she makes a pretty good salary. I think professors at a community college are in the 75 to 100k range. It would figure that she would get more for coaching.

The problem with comparing College Coaching position salaries is it will never be apples to apples. D1 coach who finishes a season 45-10 in Caifornia will make more than the same record with a D1 program in Missouri. The other thing that never gets considered in a salary comparison is tenure positions for professors. The fact is you have to LOVE IT, TO DO IT, because it is a 15 hour a day job with a lot of traveling. Not even just during season, off season you are scouting.
