HHHMMM ? If a pitcher has a sore arm, leg or hip ... we all say " ice-heat-rest" ... If a Backstop has a sore knee, instep, back, arm.... we say " suck it up, how's the pitcher? "
A screw up on my part that I will never forget - had been moving my 3 pitchers in and out, trying very hard to keep them fresh, we were in the losers bracket of a big tournament. Catcher is one that wants all the reps she can get behind the plate - that does not excuse me from watching and paying attention to how she is doing - we had had several injuries already and were down to 9 semi-healthies. We come up to the semi and dd says 'dad, xxx is hurt' -I go over to her and she is quietly crying, left her mask on so I wouldnt see. She tells me 'Coach, I cant go'. Wearing the gear all day had chaffed her skin so bad she was in pain. She says 'Coach, leave me in, I can play, but I cant catch.' I have two other catchers on the team who are very good as well but they also have solid 2nd positions. Its now super-glued in my memory that every time I switch a pitcher I go and check my catcher just as close.
