Question about earned run

Sam is sooooo right.

It's standard practice in calculating ERAs to exclude any runs that occur after the defense is presented with the opportunity to make the third out, as in the case you describe. Without the passed ball, F2 makes the putout at 1st for out #3. Earned runs are determined by reconstructing the inning without errors and passed balls. Wild pitches are another story.

Had the 2-out pitch been scored a WP, you've got yourself an earned run.

And, had there had been only 1 out when your runner scored on a passed ball, and the subsequent batter hit a single, you'd have to now score the run as earned, because the runner would have scored even without the previous PB.

There were 2 outs...OP said the runner scored....that means F2 didn't make the play on the BR who had to be safe at 1B in order for the runner to score.

Yeah, thats how I read the OP also ... just making sure somone didn't improperly let that run score thinking that if the baserunner crossed the dish before the put out at happened at first, that it would somehow be allowed ... I have seen more bizarre calls ...

It was called a 3rd ko looking, so that would negate wild pitch, passed ball. So the only correct ruling would be an unearned run............ Right? And to add to that.... If the runner/batter made it to 1st and then scored. how would you count that as, earned or unearned?

Any/all runs scored after what should have been the third out, are unearned.

Unless there is a pitching change, the new pitcher would be on the hook for any earned runs allowed.
