The Umpire Corner

Why will Umpires refuse to ask for help from other Umpire???

Rule question? Get it answered here.

We were in a friendly & our lead off hitter hits a stand up triple to left field. The field Ump runs as soon as the ball was hit to left field to watch the play and see the play at 3rd base. One of the parents from the opposing team is yelling she never touched 1st. So they throw the ball to 1st & the field Ump calls her out. Our coach calls time and ask the field Umpire if he can please check with the Plate Ump. He says no way & if you ask again your out of here. Our coach then says please check it is a friendly what is it going to hurt? He then tossed our coach.

Now my question is why would he not check? I have seen other Umps refuse to check as well, are they afraid they might be wrong?

IF IF IF the coach was tossed for that and only that - that is a little quick and unfortunate so.

Maybe he saw the runner miss first - hence no reason to go for help.

When to go for help is a long issue that is trained - but no, we dont go for help just because "it wouldnt hurt" (in the eyes of some).

If you have the whole puzzle, you would never go for help. For what?

Just this past weekend, I've had entire crowds yelling "got her" and the ball is rolling on the ground, I had them yelling she missed the base, just this weekend, when i was 7 feet away and ALWAYS watch the runners touching the base - its so ingrained in my head it is instinctive. That is what I do. I straight up told the crowd that she did touch the base. The crowd continually lobbies even when the didnt see something.

I have 0 faith that just because some random person in the crowd said the runner didnt touch the base that that would mean this umpire didnt see her touch the base, nor that this umpire should go for help.

In fact on this play, PU has fair foul catch no catch and there is no reason to go for help and if my partner came to me on it, we are going to have a talk after the game.. he is trying to put me under a bus for his failure. My partner will learn quick that we aint going there. Probably before the next inning starts.

The play, as described, is not a go for help play and it would be inappropriate to go for help on this play.

The ONLY appropriate thing to do is for the BU to watch whether the runner touched the base or not. That is the mechanic, that is his job, that is why he is getting paid, and that is what I expect.

To me it soulds like he did that and made his call.. end of story, no we aint going for help.. back in your cage coach.

Other side of the story ... a game a couple weeks back I'm the newbie working with a Blue I know well from Coaching ... I'm on the bases, he's got the dish ... nobody on, no outs ... ball hit to deep left center field ... I button hook and watch her hit the bag at first, follow her to 2nd and into 3rd for a stand up triple ... after the inning I see the plate blue talking to Coach of the team that just finished batting ... I sweep the pitching rubber and then ask him briefly what the discussion was about ... he tells me that he told the Coach that the gal who hit the triple missed first base ... which she didn't, which he was supposed to be watching the catch not the baserunner ... now, I know this guy is a horn-dog ... so, thats where I figured his head was ... but still ...?

You are now experiencing the type of umpire coaches love and other umpires run from as fast as possible.

When working the bases, your partner probably stays closer to 1B than the prescribed 18-21' and carries a conversation with coaches especially a good looking female coach. Probably spends an inordinate amount of time chatting it up with the coaches and possibly fans. This guy will do many things including ignoring the "non-advantageous" rulings and occasionally make up some to keep the game "fair".

Be very wary of this guy, he will hang you out to dry in a heartbeat.

Wade sez: aka dancing bear umpire.

TFF! ... You guys have nailed it ... er, uh .. nailed him ... and this Coach was an attractive female ... although she is taken, had been trout fishing or drinks way too much beer ... he over-chats it up with anyone who will chat it up ... more so than being cordial ... and although I've worked with him twice and he is knowledgable of MOST of the rules, he hasn't hung me yet ... when he had officiated games where I was Coaching he often made up rules to 'hurry things along or keep them fair' ... and he looks like a Dancing Bear ... LMAO! When he told me that he told the Coach that the girl missed first ... I said "I was right on it, and she hit the bag," and "thats not the way I saw it" ... he said "I've got it covered, I always watch for that... she cut the corner and missed the bag by that much" ... I just went to my position and dropped it ... I suppose I should have pointed out to him that it wasn't his call ... but what I did ask after the game was " Under what situations, on a fly ball to the outfield, would I go out to make the call on a catch and you get the bases?" He couldn't or didn't answer and said if that situation did arise we would communicate " I've got the bases" or "I'm going out" ... What is the proper mechanic on that ?

I'd consider blocking this clueless mope.

With a runner on I would not often go out, if ever, on 2 man.

With no runners on, I will take the line shots. Thats about the only time I go out on 2 man. 2 man is inadequate coverage for a multibase runner situation as it is... losing one of them for catch no catch is a tough haul to put on a partner.

I think I will take it as a learning experience of 'what not to do' ... :o ... Just not ready to 'rock the boat & block the mope' LOL!

He may be a veteran but that umpire is far from seasoned.
