We were in a friendly & our lead off hitter hits a stand up triple to left field. The field Ump runs as soon as the ball was hit to left field to watch the play and see the play at 3rd base. One of the parents from the opposing team is yelling she never touched 1st. So they throw the ball to 1st & the field Ump calls her out. Our coach calls time and ask the field Umpire if he can please check with the Plate Ump. He says no way & if you ask again your out of here. Our coach then says please check it is a friendly what is it going to hurt? He then tossed our coach.
Now my question is why would he not check? I have seen other Umps refuse to check as well, are they afraid they might be wrong?
IF IF IF the coach was tossed for that and only that - that is a little quick and unfortunate so.
Maybe he saw the runner miss first - hence no reason to go for help.
When to go for help is a long issue that is trained - but no, we dont go for help just because "it wouldnt hurt" (in the eyes of some).
If you have the whole puzzle, you would never go for help. For what?
Just this past weekend, I've had entire crowds yelling "got her" and the ball is rolling on the ground, I had them yelling she missed the base, just this weekend, when i was 7 feet away and ALWAYS watch the runners touching the base - its so ingrained in my head it is instinctive. That is what I do. I straight up told the crowd that she did touch the base. The crowd continually lobbies even when the didnt see something.
I have 0 faith that just because some random person in the crowd said the runner didnt touch the base that that would mean this umpire didnt see her touch the base, nor that this umpire should go for help.
In fact on this play, PU has fair foul catch no catch and there is no reason to go for help and if my partner came to me on it, we are going to have a talk after the game.. he is trying to put me under a bus for his failure. My partner will learn quick that we aint going there. Probably before the next inning starts.
The play, as described, is not a go for help play and it would be inappropriate to go for help on this play.
The ONLY appropriate thing to do is for the BU to watch whether the runner touched the base or not. That is the mechanic, that is his job, that is why he is getting paid, and that is what I expect.
To me it soulds like he did that and made his call.. end of story, no we aint going for help.. back in your cage coach.
