Does anybody out there have any memory of the reason given for the establishment of the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY during the Carter Administration? Anybody? Anything? No? Didn't think so. Bottom line ... we've spent several hundred billion dollars in support of an agency, the reason for which not one person who reads this can remember.

Ready? It was very simple, and at the time everybody thought it very appropriate.

The Department of Energy was instituted 8-04-1977, TO LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL.

HEY, PRETTY EFFICIENT, HUH?

AND NOW IT'S 2008, 31 YEARS LATER, AND THE BUDGET FOR THIS NECESSARY DEPARTMENT IS AT $24.2 BILLION A YEAR, THEY HAVE 16,000 FEDERAL EMPLOYEES, AND APPROXIMATELY 100,000 CONTRACT EMPLOYEES AND LOOK AT THE JOB THEY HAVE DONE!

THIS IS WHERE YOU SLAP YOUR FOREHEAD AND SAY, "WHAT WAS I THINKING?"

Ah yes, good ole bureaucracy.

And now we are going to turn the Banking system and the car company's over to them?

We're not turning them over, the Messiah is taking them over. The collective "We" turned them over in November, sadly. Personally, I had nothing to do with it (heck, I would have voted for Billary in the primaries, had I been unfortunate enough to have been registered democrat), and even our primarily democratic state of WV didn't vote for him, but a lot of good that will do me or the numerous others who tried to keep socialism away

At least the governments ownership is supposed to be temporary until they can sell there majority ownership to a foreign country. The union (UAW) owns 30% permanently, now they can drive GM and themselves into the ground.

So if the union and the government own the company, do the union workers now get civil service protection for their jobs? Now that they are government employees. Do they qualify for the government pension system? Who does the contract negotiations, I guess the union reps go into the meetings and argue with themselves.

The UAW would never accept a contract with as little benefits as the government offers to its employees What I'm trying to figure out is, since the UAW has been elevated from "working man" status to "the man" status.......... do their members now have to vote Republican?

If their Government job is anything like my friends old Government job ... they sit at their computer, e-mail & IM friends and family on the computer, check the clock, take breaks, listen to the phone and wonder what that annoying ringing sound is , take a break before lunch, lunch, break, computer, nap time, break & go home ...
