The Umpire Corner

forfeit or not

I am coaching my daughter's dixie softball team. We are in our tournament and in the championship game. we are given a pitching log that we must log each of our pitcher's innings. the coach, opposing coach and the umpire must sign this log after each game. the opposing coach sends his daughter to the mound for her 4th inning. I protest and ask to see the pitching log. He is missing a game on his log. he claims that she only pitched one inning in this game. the log was not completed. He said that he did not have his log but the umpire signed his scorebook. no one else signed the scorebook except the umpire. during the season we have the umpire sign our book but he doesn't know the girls and he just signs when we tell him to sign. I had my log completed and I believe that he did not follow the championship rules and should have to forfeit. Anyone else with an opinion?

Been a couple years since I did Dixie ( as a Coach, not a Blue ) and my most recent rule book is from 2007. First off, what you did in regular season has nothing to do with the Tournament, so don't even bring that up as it will cloud the issue.
In the tournament there should be a protest committee present at every game... I'll assume that you protested this with them... Usually in the Dixie Tourny, they resolve the issue right then and there ... Both teams have a pitching record that the rules say must be signed by the umpire and opposing Coach ... if he can't produce his pitching record and can not get proof from the team they played against for the innings in question I would say that you win the protest ... Are you sure she was over her innings and they are cheating or are you just being a hose head ? :o ... I say this because if this game goes down as a forfeit, it is possible that their entire organization, not just their team or age group, will be out of Tournament play for next year by Dixie Rules ...

:?: you said he sent her out to pitch in the 4th ... Did she throw a pitch ... :?:

This was our city tournament which goes by Dixie Rules and yes she did pitch in her 4th inning. i called the assistant coach/scorekeeper for the game in question. He did not have the book with him but said he was pretty sure she pitched 2 innings against him which would have given her 12 innings for the tourney which was 1 too many.

I am not a Dixie official ... But if it was not the Dixie districts, regionals or states but merely a tourny going by the Dixie Rule Set ... I don't see how you can possibly think you have a case ... I think Dixie Rules for 'league play' are 12 innings a week .. maybe 15 as was ours by local league rules ... Tournament rules do not apply to a random tourny just using Dixie Rules, unless that is specified by the peeps running the tourny ....

my town is he host for the Dixie Softball World series this year. we play our city tournament by Dixie rules. the Pitching rule s we were given was 11 total innings for the tournament. if a pither pitches 3 innings she can not pitch the next game. We were given a pitching sheet. the opposing coach did not have a game listed on his pitching sheet. the umpire signed his book but the pitching sheet was incomplete. I followed the rules and completed the pitching sheet so why should he be allowed to not complete the pitching sheet correctly. I probably would not be thinking of pursuing this but after the game the opposing coach was bragging to my assistant coach that he was intentionally walking his daughter and my daughter. my assistant told him that this is an instructional league and that we have not pitched around anyone this year and he should pitch to the kids. He told my assistant that we needed a loss. Also he has been telling his girls that were not very good hitters to take 2 strikes. We need to be teaching the kids how to hit not to stand and watch the ball.

I think Dixie Rules also state that you have to protest right then and there ... you can't go back a few days later and protest ... but perhaps you can ... if she pitched over her 11 innings or pitched more than her 3 innings the previous game then you have a case ( if you know this to be true ? , or are you grabbing at straws ? ) ... all that other crap about he said/she said has nothing to do with anything except the opposing Coach is a jerk ... and from what I used to see in Dixie that apparantly is not a violation of the rules

I did protest during the game. the umpire said that because an umpire had signed his book says his pitcher only pitched one inning I lost the protest. I went to the recreation dept on Monday and questioned if I had my pitching sheet filled out correctly why did the opposing coach not have to fill out the sheet. the league rep said that as long as the book was signed the sheet didn't matter. then why do you give it to us? I would not have pursued this except his parents were bragging after the game that they intentionally walked by 3 big hitters. My assistant coach said " this is a 10u rec league why would you take the bat out of a child's hands. We were told " you needed a loss" We played again Monday and He pitched around my daughters. I did not... I pitched to his one power hitter and she accounted for 6 of the 13 runs they scored. we lost 13 to 11. I know people are going to say. it was my fault i should have pitched around his power hitter. I am trying to teach these girls to play softball. after the game the umpire told me that it made him sick to listen to the parents encouraging their children to stand and wait for a walk. at 10u we should be teaching the kids to swing away.

You seem to have protested wrong ... Dixie Tournament Rules are for there to be a protest commitee present at every game ... when you protested to the umpire he has to turn around and beckon the protest commitee right then and there. That being said, you don't seem to have any proof that she was over her innings ... Do you? ... Since your are still at the 10U level, I will give you the benefit of my experience going all the way through Debs age ... You are going to find all manner of A-holes out there and the best you can do is to Coach your team ... teach your kids class and sportsmanship ... don't sweat the stuff you can't control ... and when you meet this hose head in the future ... as your gals get older ... they will love playing them more and more ... they will realize that the best way to deal with teams with no class is to kick some a*s ...
