batting out of order?

What's on your mind?

by Judd » Sun Mar 23, 2008 11:07 am

This weekend we experienced a batter from the other team who took 3 pitches, then they switched the batter. Once they switched, thats when our scorekeeper realized they were out of order. We thought the batter should be out but the batter took the existing count and play continued.

Is this because our team did not catch it or just if an error is noticed, it is simply fixed. This was in 14U travel

That was the right call. In that situation, batter is NOT out. Being that they caught it, the right batter can take her spot, assuming the count. To get the out, you have to wait. If the batter that is batting out of order, reaches base safely, thats when you call time, and tell the blue. But, you have to wait until then, or the right batter may assume whatever count the wrong hitter has...........

Nzane mostly has it right..

If you are looking for the out, you need to wait until they complete their at bat, it doesnt matter if they reach base safely or not for the BOO out. If Off or Def noticies during the at bat, as nzane said, the correct batter is put up to bat. Once the at bat is complete, (even if the batter is put out), but before the next pitch, the def coach can then get the BOO out.

Example

1 Out. B5 is scheduled to bat. B6 bats and K's for 2nd Out. Def coach appeals BOO before the next pitch. Umpire will rule B5 out.. thats 3 outs.

so basically if we see them batting out of order, just shut up if we want the easy out? So both batters would be out?

What happens if there are runners on base and runners advance or score due to batter hitting the ball?

Yeah, just wait until the at bat is completed.

If they reach base safely... any outs made stand, advances (including the incorrect B/Rs) are nullified, and the person who should have batted is out.

The only outs you get are the ones made during the at bat and the person who should have batted is out.

+1 on that - yes, if the batting team notices firts, they just make the correction.

Now that being said, in two tournaments, we've TWICE encountered teams that have the wrong uni # on their lineup sheet, but the proper name. "Bonds" shows as #24 on the submitted lineup sheet when in fact, Bonds is wearing #25 at the plate...

annoying, but so it goes
Being from NorCal, what do I know anyway???

Just to be sure I understand ...... If B6 reaches base on a walk, and the Def Coach appeals BOO before the next pitch, B6 remains on base and B5 is out. Only one out in this case.

Speaking ASA

No, that isn't correct. But then again, you changed the scenario.

On a BOO violation properly appeal, the following occurs:

The player scheduled to bat is out;
Any outs which occured during that "at bat" remain;
Any runners which advanced due to the improper batter putting the ball into play, receiving a base on balls or award, must return to the base occupied at the time of the pitch;
The batter due in the box is the one which appears unless s/he is on base at the time or was one of the players retired on the previous play in which that case, they are just skipped.

Just trying to understand this rule as to what happens to B6 when she completes an 'at-bat' when B5 is suppose to up there. There should be several scenarios for this rule.

Granted if B6 strikes out or hits out or tagged out or play is made at 1st base, B6 is out along with B5 on a BOO appeal. Two outs.

In a different scenario, to keep this simple, let's say B6 is walked. There is a BOO appeal and B5 is out, everyone returns to their original base before the last pitch, does that mean B6 bats again? Sounds like it to me.
