PU has gotta love when they show you the the little strike zone box on TV

That "box" is a computerized guestimate and I put very little faith in it.

I know its just a guesstimate...but when pitches are inside the little box...they are usually called strikes. When 3 pitches hit the same spot in the box and only one is called a strike I feel they were being squeezed...Sebathia was getting them called outside the box.

Just a guesstimate ...but I bet MTR is an umpire?

I am, but that has nothing to do with my opinion. Check this out:

http://www.ask.com/bar?q=How+does+the+pitch+tracker+in+baseball+work%3F&page=1&qsrc=0&ab=1&title=MLB+Extended+Gameday+Pitch+Logs%3A+A+Tutorial&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwebusers.npl.illinois.edu%2F%7Ea-nathan%2Fpob%2Ftechnology.htm&sg=eEZzNrvebrBjQn8gm1Za5kwwRe0562f1b4YBLrzZoIY%3D&tsp=1256172027699

It is basically a series of photos of a pitched ball. The computers track the pitch through the series of photos and projects the point where the ball will pass the plate. The box shown on TV is apparently created by a technician with a joy stick who adjusts the sides of the box to simulate the strike zone for each particular batter.

I knew where to find this because it isn't new. It has been around for a while and, BTW, it is not being used tonight in the Dodgers-Phillies game.

BTW, as an umpire, I would welcome some other manner to determine strikes. Don't know an umpire who wouldn't mind just working the bases and the hell with the pitches. Who are the players going to blame then, IBM, Dell, Lenovo, Acer, Hewlett-Packard? ;)

In SP, there are leagues which use a "strike mat" which I think is ridiculous, but then again, have at it. That just means that the 6'4" batter and the 5'2" batter have the exact same strike zone. It also means that pitches which curve over the plate through the strike zone will be ruled a ball and pitches nowhere near the strike zone may hit the mat an be ruled a strike!

I checked out your link and found this quote in it:

"We found our measurements to coincide with the predicted positions to within an average error of less than a quarter of the baseball's diameter over the entire flight path. "

I am not whining I just thought the ump was squeezing the strike zone....I am sure you can attest that some borderline pitches could go either way and for one reason or another they were not going the Angels way.

Yes, against a model. But that doesn't allow for the set-up of the superimposed box shown on the TV screen. Even watching a GameTracker occasionally will record a strike that does not show within the box on the screen.

Which I have never understood. Why would an umpire want to prolong a game by not calling strikes which he could? Hmmmm....

CoachMatt ... I highly recommend that this winter, you contact NFHS, ASA, NSA or whichever rule set you usually play under ... there are clinics and classes and discussions that you should be part of ... you seem to have a little Umpire anger problem ... Myself, as a Coach, have always respected their authority though not always agreeing and sometimes outrightly blowing a gasket in their direction ... But the truth of the matter is that after attending the clinics and classes and online discussions ... after getting behind the dish or on the bases ... after having Coaches and or players yell things that have no basis for argument in your direction ... You may feel that it has made you a better more knowledgeable Coach ,as I do ... or, you can just sit on your bucket and never walk a mile in their shoes ... Do I think every Umpire deserves to be on the field ? ... No more than I believe every player or Coach deserves the same honor ... But from what I have seen those guys/gals get fewer and fewer assignments until they are back bagging groceries ... Umpires are more willing to help another Umpire get a call right than you can imagine ... there are very very few that don't give a sh*t ...

Umpires are paid to make calls and pitchers are paid to make adjustments. As for the call on third I don't see how anyone could say anything but the umpire missed the call. I had nothing to do with the outcome of the game.
