The Umpire Corner

Which coach can ask question to an ump?

It does say "a coach" but under definition of coach it says anyone who occupies a coaches box or assists in the direction of the team. Their are 2 coaches boxes on the field and any number of people in the dugout could theoretically be assisting in the direction of the team.

That being said, I have had UIC's tell me both ways on this. Some only want you to communicate with the head coach, others dont care as long as it is a coach of the team. I can see the argument for only speaking with a single reprentative from each team as this keeps any translation of the conversation from clouding what was actually discussed and both the umpire and coach have full knowledge of any other discussions during the game.

It depends.

General or rule discussions are going to be with the HC. However, if it is a specific play, I have no problem dealing with the closer coach.

For example, if there is a play at 3B and the HC is at 1B or in the 1B dugout, I'm not going to have a problem talking to the coach at 3B unless that becomes problematic and then I will turn to the HC.

I also will speak to the Asst coach if that coach is the most likely person so question it (ie closest), if they are other reasonable and no ganging up will be tolerated. There is a train of thought that exists that an assistant coaches job is to make sure his dd plays 2b and thats about it. Also, many times, I know the asst coach and have a mutual respect for them that we can have a discussion. If youre a chirper though, you'll get 0 privileges and a very short rope. So Asst Coaches attitude will often set the tone. IMO, if an ump isnt letting you speak and youre an asst coach, you might think about whether or not you are the problem and what you can do to fix it.

So there is no rule that specificlly says 'Only the coach who goes to the Home Plate meeting can appeal a call to the umpires'. Thanks for the info, and yes I probably should have got booted but maybe he felt bad that he made up a rule and didn't feel he could kick me out for a Non-Rule.

In your specific case, I would have amended my "plate meeting participant" stance in order to speak with you and not unduly delay the game. I would not have ejected you.

Depends on what association you belong to and who trained you as an umpire, but I personally do not eject anyone unless that person crosses the line into a personal attack. If it's just normal coach grousing, I'll let it go for an inning or so before taking the coach away from the girls and letting him/her know that I won't tolerate it any further and he/she needs to decide whether they want to stay or not.

It's up to me as a PU to use my judgment as to when I think a coach has crossed the line into unnecessarily or purposely delaying the game.

So how many times would you have told 'cent' that you didn't want to speak to him, but rather to the Coach that attended the pre-game conference ... and inning after inning, time after time he walks slowly out to 'challenge' your calls ... then walks slowly back to the dugout and the Asst. Coach walks slowly out to the field to 'challenge' your calls ... I may have mis-spoken by saying "if I had to tell him more than once" ... I probably would have given him twice ( and possibly a courtesy in between inning pow-wow ) ... but the next time his foot hit the foul line I would have sent him packing ... and I'm far from hot headed or on a power trip, but someone has to keep order ...

I agree with SoCal Blue and Gimmie, a warning needs to be given. At that point I don't go out and just send the assistant coach, but slowly of course, right Art.
