Question for California from Texas

What's on your mind?

Cogratulations on proving the point that Texas teams think that 9 players on a team is enough. Please go check the roster of the top teams in California and see how many atheletes they carry. Maybe Texas Fusion are loading up for nationals instead of FUN IN THE SUN tournaments held at Hurst..

Why don't educate us ignorant Texas softball parents on exactly which California teams carry 14-15 players or more during their regular season. Honestly, I'ld really like to know. I hear this all the time, but when you look at their websites, you see the same 11, 12, and 13 players you see in Texas. Maybe the top 10 California teams at ASA nationals might carry 14 or 15 to nationals, but there are only a few who do so during the regular season.

We always hear rumors about how many players you carry on a regular season roster. 11,12,13,14,15,16.

Can you clear things up for us.

Thanks,
The top teams in Texas are now starting to carry more and I think it is hard for everyone down here to imagine that it is possible to make all the players/parents happy.

Throughout the year most will play 9 or 10 and have 2-3 subs. Rare are teams with 15, 16 players. Many teams show up with 10-11 players. Thats how it seems to me and I look at a lot of lineups throughout the year.

I wouldnt know how many are rostered and just not there.

We have 13 right now with 2 injured. Last year we carried 15 all the way through Nationals.
It really depends on the program and age. Some weaker teams struggle to keep 10. Some top teams have 15-18.

Let's be clear here. At the 10u, 12u, and 14u age, how many California teams really carry 14 or more players on their regular season roster. I think most of the top Texas 16u and 18u teams have been carrying 14, 15, or more for some time. I certainly am no expert on all things California, but it's been my experience that even in California, 14 or more on a regular season roster is rare at the 14u age group and below . . . even for the top teams.

I never carry more than 13....I love carrying 11 when there are no injuries, etc. I like to play all of my players as much as possible.

How often do the Cali teams bring 2-3 girls to Nationals that didn't play with them all year?

What age group, Sam?

Sam coaches 18G

I just put this on another thread, but it belongs here too:

The CA teams did have bigger rosters than us out of state folks last year at 12U Nationals, but not by that much. From what I heard, the # of girls increase with each age group. 12U carrying 11-14, 14's carrying 12-15, 16's carrying 13-16, and 18G having as many as 18 girls. I have noticed an increase in rosters in some of the 12 & 14 rosters lately.

Here's my 2 cents. I think at the younger ages a bigger roster is a detriment because other than your core group, the girls aren't getting the game time experience they need at such a developmental age. I'm talking 10-14U. I think money is a factor in SOME of these teams. More girls = more money.

On the flip side, especially starting at 14U, girls are so much more active in other sports and interests that a coach has to cover tournaments for volleyball, basketball, etc. Does that warrant having 6 players on the bench? IMO, no, but I'm not the one juggling travel permits either.

I will leave them nameless, but there's no way a couple of high profile teams here can explain that having 15 or 16 girls on a 12U team is good for anyone, but the coach.

Next thing you know, girls will be starting private batting, throwing, fielding lessons as 6 yr olds so mom and dad can make sure she makes that high profile 12U team in a few years. Ok, a little exaggerated, but you get the point.

The hardcore 12u's in cali due tend to carry more players. The only purpose I see for it is to strike fear in all your players. Bring your "A" game or there is 5 girls to your right that will take your spot.
