Local DFW player injured in car crash (Caitlyn Crain)

A Fort Worth woman remained in intensive care Friday after the car she was driving hit a deer and skidded into a school bus Thursday night.

Four Eastland students and the driver were in the bus at the time of the collision. The driver and two students suffered minor injuries and were released after treatment at Eastland Hospital.

Caitlyn Leann Crain, 18, of Fort Worth, was southbound on State Highway 6 about 8:45 p.m. Thursday when her Chrysler PT Cruiser struck a deer, according to a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Crains car skidded sideways and was struck by the northbound school bus, the release stated. She was taken from the scene by helicopter.

Crain suffered multiple injuries and remained in intensive care at Hendrick Medical Center on Friday afternoon.

She is still in ICU but she is doing better. She is awake and talking. Dont want to go into to much detail of her injuries out of respect to the family. She is expected to make a full recovery just might take a little time. Please keep Caitlyn and her family in your prayers.

I spoke with a good friend of theres today. Her left arm was pretty banged up including a fracture. She had a collapsed lung and damage to her spleen. They took the breathing tube out yesterday and everthing went fine. Expected to make a full recovery. Hoping to go home in a day or two. Believe it or not the doctor told her that she could possibly be ready to play ball in February. Very tough kid and knowing her I would not be surprised. A big thanks to the softball community for keeping the Crain family in your prayers

[/quote] Has a near brush with death (head-on collision with bus) and after 3 months to the day, pitches a one hitter and a perfect game (except one walk) for Odessa College last weekend! Strikes out 14 of 19 batters in the "perfect" game.

Many know Caitlyn Crain as that scary pitcher who set high school strike out records for Saginaw HS near Ft.Worth (around 1,200 strikeouts in HS career). Texas Elite and Texas Sox. I know her like a daughter. She is my pitching student for 8 years now, since age 12.

Though Caitlyn Crain had many offers, D1 and such, wanted to spend first year close to home and get her feet wet and get some basics out of the way. Close to home was a blessing after all she's been through her first year.

Last Nov. 19 about 8:30pm Caitlyn was headed to Waco to visit a friend and hit a deer which sent her head-on into a school bus of basketball players. She was helicoptered to Abilene where she was in a coma for 3 days, punctured lung, torn spleen, dislocated left elbow.
Tube in her chest and ligaments repaired. Restricted to slow walking for 6 weeks to protect her injured sleen.

David Crain, her Dad, said when he got the phone call and raced to Abilene, he didn't think about what it would mean for his daughter's softball career. "We were just happy she was alive", choking up. "Anything else was gravy." Two weeks later they found her wallet in the middle of a pasture, $250 still in it. That's how violent the collision was.

Caitlyn: "I hadn't pitched or anything in 3 months. I didn't want to go out and start playing and not do very good and the team looks bad because I haven't been playing for so long. After I pitched my first pitch, it was a strike and I had a huge smile. I turned by back to the batter so she wouldn't know. It was pretty exciting."

A one hitter and then a no hitter, the last a perfect game except a walk. 34 batters and 22 strikeouts and 1 walk for the 2 college games.

Odessa College Joel Prickett: "Though a freshman, Caitlyn is considered one of the best pitchers in the country in junior college. She's only practiced her pitching 7 times since the wreck. She hasn't lost any speed and her rise and drop are great as ever. Around 65mph on our gun."

"When she's pitching, the defense just works better, too. I don't know what it is."
