High School coaches wont let their players play

by TRICKY DICK » Sun Apr 04, 2010 5:40 am

Has anyone else been dealing with players saying their High School coach wont let them play or even practice with their travel team?

This happens on a regular basis!. Just don't tell them you are going to select practice. What they don't know, doesn't hurt them.

Furthermore, are you as a HS coaching going to suspend or kick off your stud pitcher just because she practices with her select team every Sunday.

My next question to these HS coaches is this....who are you there for? Are you there for yourself and your record etc? Or are you there for the kids?

For example, last year I know of a girl who was told by her HS coach that after Jan. 1 she was no longer allowed to participate in any select activities. The player specifically asked to go to a early January showcase tournament full of college coaches and the player was told she was not allowed to go.

So, basically HS coach said "my team is more important than you playing in front of college coaches which may help you get a college scholarship and help you for the rest of your life."

My DD has 2 such players on her team. They let their HS coach tell them what to do.I think it is so silly.I also think they use it so they get out of practice with their club teams. Those kids & their parents are only fooling themselves.

I don't think its asking too much that the girls refrain from practicing with their travel teams during the varsity season. What is it? 6 weeks out of the entire year?
They're likely either playing games or practicing with the varsity team 6 days a week anyhow during that time.
Why risk an injury to who is likely one of, if not, the best players on the team?

High School coaches are no more than paid babysitters.Just think how much better would our kids be if our travel coaches has as much time as the HS coach does.My take is that you get your kids back to the real coaches as fast as you can .And also pray that the HS coach did not try to adjust your kids mechanics .Last year my kid's freshman year our coach that has never had a slapper decided to tweak her swing.(It cost me 250.00$ to get her old swing back)

So go play.

Ok Mr high school coach. You are the guy I,M talking about.People like you don't get it and never will.
If you think High School practice & play is really up to your select team then she must be a on a pretty bad team..Good luck.
Also what in the heck does "why risk an injury" mean?
Now feel free to tell me how your DD'S HS program is special and she is really getting some good from it. Let me know how many scouts are there also.YOU MUST BE PLAYING THE HS LOOK PROGRAM. HAPPY EASTER.

Well Dick, since you asked.....
Yes. I do believe our HS coach is at least as good as those who run her TB program. That is not at all a knock on the program. Our varsity coach is quite good. As are many of the varsity coaches in the area. Unlike what many of you all complain about, they are not history teachers looking to pick up some spare change babysitting softball players for a few weeks out of the year.
He is heavily entrenched in our local rec league and works with the girls from a very early age.
He heads up the local fall league and runs open gyms for anyone interested from Oct thru Feb.
And again.....he is not alone. Many of the areas school coaches offer similar training throughout the year.
As a matter of fact, the head coach of her TB team just became the varsity coach at a neighboring school. Our own school softball program fairs better than most of the other sports programs at our school. The coaches here are quite committed to the girls.
I don't believe asking the girls to respect that commitment and not practice/play with their TB teams is all that big a deal for such a short time.

Really where are you getting the 6 weeks per year and the short period of time?

I gave an example of the HS coach telling the girls "nothing after Jan. 1st". Given that playoffs start around the first of May that would be more like 12-15 weeks which is more than double that amount of time.

Even if the coach didn't allow it starting once games started you'd be talking about the final week of Feb until playoffs in May so it would be 8-10 weeks.

Do you know how many practices a player misses for our select team in that time? In 15 weeks they'd miss at least 7 practices...and IF HS coaches "allowed" more players to participate our select team would likely practice even more so than every other week.

Also, here is another concern I have...someone mentioned that their team only had 1-2 players that listened to their HS coach on this type of rule. I am concerned for those one or two players that either can't make it to the select practice or are using it as an excuse as that automatically isolates them from their select teammates. The players at select practice that are grinding through a long tough week and select practice can't help but think "it's crap that so and so is not hear having to bust her butt". It can't be good for team chemistry or the individual not attending.

First.......I wasn't responding to your "after Jan. 1st". I was responding to the OP.

OK....Maybe 6 weeks is a tad short.....didn't do the math before responding. Our schools start games this coming week...so maybe closer to 8 weeks.

For the most part, the travel season (tournaments) in our area, doesn't get rolling until June. So for 10 of the 12 months out of the year, the HS coach can't restrict players from participating in travel.

So I still don't think having them concentrate solely on HS ball for the short period of time the HS season lasts is asking too much.

Your actually not ASKING anything. If they don't want to play HS ball, they don't have to. Its not required. If you don't like the Coaches rules, don't play.
