Rules in Playing up To Varsity/Down to JV

by whatever » Wed Apr 07, 2010 12:40 pm

Just wondering... dd is a Freshman. She's been asked by Varsity coach to play up with them in the Pendleton Heights Classic on Saturday. Do you all know if there are rules for playing back and forth between JV and Varsity? I know I play USTA tennis and in league play if you play up a certain number of times you are rostered on the higher team. Is there such a rule for HS ball? Can they just switch back and forth any time they want? Coach has taken a few girls from JV already (some are just riding the pine though). Any help on the rules would be appreciated.

Are the rules different in each state?

I, too would like to know the rules on this in California.

This is what I understand the rules (as told to me by JV coach) are in CA:
1) Players can move up/down as often as they like as long as games are not league or post season games
2) Once a player plays Varsity in a league game, they can no longer play down to JV for league or post season games for the remainder of season (OK to move down for non league games or tournament play)

When you are saying "league," are you meaning conference games? Any help on the Indiana rule on this would be helpful. Thanks.

In Indiana, she can play 28 games or 26 with a tournament. If she enters the game, she is considered to have played a game. Being a courtesy runner does NOT constitute entry into the game. If she pinch runs, she has entered into the game. If both varsity and JV games are played at the same time, she cannot go between the two, she has to play one or the other. It's in the IHSAA by-laws, but frankly right now I'm too tired/lazy to look it up verbatim.

I understand - but switching within the season is my question, not within a tourney. She's played 5 games w/JV, can she play 3 games with Varsity and then get put back down to JV and go back to Varsity?

I know - it's a foggy, wet, cold day here!

Yes she can go between the two as long as she does not exceed the maximum number of games.

Mick and slapperdad are correct. All you (and the coaching staff) should worry about is the 28 game limit which can be divvied up between JV and varsity action.

I'm not familiar with the format of the Pendleton Classic, if they were to play more than two games, that would constitute a tournament, thus changing the number from 28 to 26. That's my interpretation, am I right coach? And if it is considered at tournament, you don't count the games, just the tournament, leaving her 26 other games to play.

With all of this "counting games" it begs the question, does this even get monitored? My next question is sectional (and beyond) play. Is that counted as a tournament? So then let's say this PH Classic is a tournament, then the post season...what is the game rule then?

Backstop you know as well as I do, some schools monitor quarters/games and some schools don't. Those are regular season games only, the IHSAA tournament is not counted towards the game limit.

Here is the rule, I am forced by the Evansville grad to dig it up and post it! It should also be noted that I made a mistake, pinch running and pinch hitting do NOT count as having played a game.

51-3
The maximum number of season games for any team or student excluding the IHSAA tournament series
shall be:
a. 28 and no tournament; or
b. 26 and 1 tournament.
(1) If a player or team participates in more than the one (1) tournament permitted during the season,
the number of games played in excess shall be included in the 26 games permitted during the
season.
(2) School-day games shall be limited to 22 school days.
(3) If a player participates in a game as a pinch hitter or pinch runner, at the varsity level, it does not
count toward the maximum number of game limitations for that player.
(4) Players may not change levels of play if games are being played simultaneously. Players may
only change levels of play at the completion of both games.

So lets say our Frosh DD's team plays four games Saturday. We'll count that as a tournament, and she's allowed to play in 26 more games, those games can be either JV or V, it doesn't matter.
