Reasons for NOT going to States?

What's on your mind?

by anonlooker » Thu May 08, 2008 2:20 pm

DD told me about a team that is not going to SoCal States because "it is only a two game guarantee".

I was about to laugh until she told me it was true, which got me wondering... what are the craziest reasons not to play for a shot at Nationals? Or most common?

Fire away, this could be fun!
Don't worry about tomorrow. You did that yesterday.

As I understand if you do not attend a ASA state tournament, you are not able to attend any ASA national tournaments. For attending the ASA state tournament you are entered into ASA Western Nationals even if you do not win. Which from what I hear is a pretty good tournament.

Correct me if I am wrong but I know I don't have to ask for correction on the bucket, it is given at will ;)

You are wrong. Playing at State allows you a couple of things....

A) Top three get berths to ASA Nationals
B) 4-7 get berths to Regionals...top 2 at Regionals get berths to ASA Nationals....and fill in berths come from the Regionals
C) Automatically allows you entry to ASA Western Nationals where top 2 finishers get berths to next season's ASA Nationals.

Thats it.

Lots of team bypass the State Tournament for very good reasons.....The Desperados, for instance, would skip State to play in the New England Region 1 Qualifier...while all the other studs were in SoCal...they always got their berth.

It is a Double Elimination Tournament. Alot of factors go into this. You might draw an easy team your first game or a hard team. You might win you first game or lose. Bottom line you have to loose two games to be put out. Some teams had some tough draws last year and some had easy. You never know how good you really are unless you go up against the best. Who knows you might get a draw and surprise everyone and make the top 3.

It's all about the draw and where in the bracket you end up in accordance with "The Big Dogs"....It always gets interesting though when "The Big Dogs" end up playing in game 1 or 2.....It gets serious real quick!!

Would it surprise you that our team has no goal of going to nationals? Not every team on the planet is looking to go to nationals. Obviously I dont know the Cali scene but here in GA, the majority of travel teams are not even considering ASA nationals. Theres a few that are, some are going to USFA world series but theres really no qualifying for that. You just register

We have whole organizations focused on B/C travel teams. A handful of tournaments I have been in, have had A and B brackets, the rest are B

While its great to achieve for that goal, lets be realistic, not every travel team is destined for greatness. Some girls just like to play

Actually, for USFA you need to attend the State Tournament (of receive a berth via an NIT).

From the USFA website:

Teams must meet the following criteria:

1. Team must be USFA Sanctioned
2. Must do at least one of the following:
A. Receive a direct berth at a USFA Regional NIT*
B. Attend at least 1 State Qualifier or NIT
3. Attend the USFA State Tournament in your home state **
4 . Receive an at-large berth if no USFA events are available within 300 miles of your teams home. (Contact your Regional Director for details) ***

* NIT events will award 1 birth for each 5 teams participating per age group.
** All teams must attend the State Tournament in the state in with they are registered, with the only exception being those teams who received a berths via an NIT.
*** At-large berths will be limited to teams in states with no State Tournament, State Qualifiers or Regional NIT events and may not be transferred. All other teams must qualify.

How about " We can't compete with the big dogs". With that attitude you never will.

I agree 100% (if that's the real reason) and think it's chicken sh- manure.

But what's to say the Big Dogs won't be in Park City? That seems as good a tune-up for ASA Nats as any.
