Tacky like that is learned

by juan hugh jass » Mon May 12, 2008 9:03 am

For the last two years I've watched 95 teams play and without a doubt, 95 Glory has the most passionate parents in the stands.

It's little girl softball, not a Jerry Springer episode. Foul balls are expected, foul mouths are not. How many times do parents have to be tossed by officials before it clicks? If you sit with 95 Glory and you relish in loud-mouthed antics of your peers, even if you don't spout off yourself, you are guilty of the dumbing-down of sport.

If you feel wronged, like some great injustice has befallen you, I suggest you look in the mirror and ask, "Would my boss, lover, parent, kid, pet... understand this rage?" Ask yourself, "Am I really the smartest person out here?" Ask yourself, "Is this about my kid, or is it really about me?"

The answer is simple: It's about you, you just happen to have a kid with a ball glove and some modicum of talent. That tiny bit of talent is going to be squashed instead of developed with baffoonish antics in the bleachers if you don't become your brother's keeper.

If you allow loud-mouthed "victims in the stands" to bloviate, you are as guilty as they.

I saw a pick-up player's dad gather his daughters gear and leave the 95 Glory spectacle on 5/11/08. THAT showed character, a sense of responsibility for game, and measured concern for the future of his daughter's athletic career.

Required viewing for all the 95 Glory parents should be the Will Farrell movie Kicking and Screaming. It shows just how well the single-minded of purpose approach to kids sports plays out.

No, this is about the parents. They spend a little time and money and think their kid is heading for a Division I full boat scholarship on their way to Olympic fame. Good luck with all that. I'm sure plenty of social retards- that live on McNuggets and have no friends except the one's lucky enough to make it on a team roster decided by ill-equipped megalomaniacs- make it in the real world.

Yes, tacky is learned. Excellence, honor, and love of the game is too. Build 'em up...don't tear 'em down with bleacher antics.

I agree with some of what you are saying but please explain why you think you are so much better by coming on here and bad mouthing this team.

They are not the only ones that have ever been loudly upset by situation on the field but you seem to have only feeling towards one certain team. I have seen tons of teams/parents get upset over the 20 years that I have been watching teams play.

Its no secret that everyone is out to beat 95 Glory and the Travelers. Wether you are for them or against them, try to support the girls and stop the bad mouthing these teams on and off the field. Let them try to settle their problems between themselves. Just My Opinion.

If you've been WATCHING for 20 years, you're part of the problem. Me? I"m a pundit. This is what I do.

I've seen 95 Glory, on more than one occasion, have fans ejected...usually the same 2 or 3. It happened again yesterday. Is that somehow defensible?

Don't get your dander up someonecares...and don't deflect. This isn't about me, it's about the degradation of youth sport.

I'm just saying that if this is about youth sports then it should not be about one particular team but about all of them. All you have done is point out one team in general. Why not make your point without showing that you obviously do not like this team.

It's immaterial whether I like a team or not.

I was there.

I saw.

I heard.

I write now because this is not an isolated incident with 95 Glory and it's seeming to be some wacked-out "badge of honor" for the same 2 or 3 95 Glory fans to get tossed from a game.

I could care less who wins, but with rabid fans and dimwits living vicariously through their daughters, Mother's Day 2008 will not be remembered as a day when 95 Glory won, but showed their arse...again. So tell me, one more time, how I'm a hater and 95 Glory is far from reproach.

If a any team (or person) doesn't want to get lambasted, then they need to conduct themselves with the appropriate decorum.

I agree totally with the concept of what you are saying.....and I agree it involves lots of teams not just Glory....I firmly believe that this can be traced to primarily two things.....the failed athletic exploits of some parents, and the feeling that we must do anything(sometimes Illegal) to get ahead in life. When parents push so hard with lessons, money, etc. they sometimes lose it....Is it any wonder that the burnout rate for athletes is high.....is it any wonder we are faced with more problems than ever in society? Steroids, drugs, etc. Amateur athletics is fast disappearing......and it saddens me to see it.

Here, here (and finally)!!

I love the arguments of moral equivalence that are inevitably made whenever a person points out poor conduct--as if pointing out poor conduct is just as bad as the poor conduct itself. It isn't. Quite the contrary in fact...it's a moral obligation.

I'm sick to death of catering to the least common denominators in our society(ies).

Juan, my hat is off.

I came on here last week blasting Coach Flan for the way he manages his girls and what he teaches., and I was more than blasted back.

JMHO I think it starts with the coaches and how he acts and reacts to game situations and that is how the girls and the parents will act and react also. I'm sure i live in a fuzzy world like i was told last week but I do feel teams are built with the morals of the coach.
