Economy the issue???

by Iluvblue » Mon Jun 28, 2010 12:14 pm

As of now, there are only like 5 teams in the upcoming 16u qualifier in Hayward, and 5 or 6 in the 4th of July qualifier in Roseville in 14u. It was not that long ago that we were at a NQ in Sacramento and there were 56 teams in it (about 8 years ago). So is the economy hurting teams that badly or have people just decided nationals is not worth spending that much money for????

Probably a combination of both.

There are 5 or 6 listed for Roseville because the site hasn't been updated since June 2, before SoCal States and most NorCal Metros. So it's unlikely the list is current... typical of most most ASA websites... perhaps the economy is affecting their ability to post information?

Brackets should be out by Tuesday night, but then again...

Also, some SoCal teams aren't chasing berths to ASA, opting instead to play Premier.

btw, SoCal 16u states was just this past weekend.

Did the 16u teams from Socal have to qualify for this tourney? There have been a few 16u premiere qualifiers up here.

We qualified, but the dates make it really difficult with school starting back up.

Not sure what you're referring to by "this tourney", but of course the SoCal teams didn't have to qualify. Such is our reputation all we have to do is call the TD and they are thrilled to have us.

Curious though, why would you qualify for a tournament you don't plan on attending?

Wouldn't it be better if that berth went to a team that actually intends to compete in the tournament? :?

I was speaking about the Premiere 16u Championships.

We are a 14u team, we qualified for ASA nationals at Metros and will be attending that. We played in this tourney to get better games to make us really work in every game. Out of the 7 games we played this weekend, only 1 was a blowout and we actually got to go ITB in one game. So we got exactly what we wanted out of the tourney, but it just makes no sense for us to try and do both tourneys, financially, or sanity wise:)

The berth will be passed down to another team that wants to attend.

I believe the reason there are not many people in the National qualifier this weekend is because they are all plying in Colorado! Not sure why the had a qualifier this weekend with all the big tournaments going on in Colorado
