The little brothers and sisters are going to run and play all day without proper hydration if the family cant afford to keep buying drinks from concessions. We had one parent that had to leave the park because she had two children under the age of two who were cooking in the 100+ heat and she did not have the money to keep buying them drinks from the concession stand. So the result is if you cant afford to buy concessions then your not welcome at the park or you can stay and put the kids at risk. Bad business for our sport. I really think this is a cause worth fighting for!
Is this going to be the policy at Field of Dreams for the World Series? Not a good start if the answer is yes. Move the tournament to Southlake or another family friendly park. Is this going to be the policy at Killeen for Southern Nationals? It could affect who goes from our team families because they have a really bad taste in their mouth after this weekend.
I focused more on the players because they are the ones who are exerting effort and requiring water and they are "captive" in the games. While I too think it's a bad situation for families I also know they are not tied down to their lawn chairs nor or they locked in to concessions. They can get up and walk out to their cars to get drinks or food if they want. Like I said earlier, we saw this all the time for years and we just knew to have coolers in the car and we went to the parking lot once in a while. Wives and mothers also would carry a purse with a bottle or two in the bottom for small children. If purses weren't huge they generally didn't get a second glance.
Reality is that many parks have concession contracts that pretty much determine concession policy. The company running the concessions have to make a profit and that's more difficult than many might think, so they will want the no-cooler policy enforced. It makes for a tough situation in some ways but you can deal with it and it doesn't have to be a lot of drama. Once you do this a while you get used to it. Just tell your team families to carry coolers. Not wonderful but a way to get by.
