He gave me the deer in the headlights look and said interference for what? I asked if he would get help from the Base Ump and he said no there was no interference. This was one inning after he came to me between innings to tell me that my catcher turning her glove when she caught the ball (framing the pitch the way she was taught) was blocking his view and he was calling balls on close strikes because he couldn't see the ball. I then explained to him that if he called the game from the slot position and actually saw where the ball crossed the plate it would be a whole lot easier to call a game. After that and not getting an interference on a practice swing to my catchers head, I kinda lost my charm and proceeded to tell him what a good job he wasn't doing. He was green and I was just helping him out.....what can I say?

NoNo

Usually its catchers domes when they dont know to work as a catcher that block the view. Never heard "framing" as blocking a view.

Too bad.. I'm not surprised. Frankly, there are a lot of terrible umpires out there. I think umpires that frequent the message boards represent umpires who work hard and want to learn the rules and love the job. There are many idiots out there. I saw a BU field a batted ball the PU had declared fair yesterday. Some of the stuff is just idiotic. Add to it his horrible out of uniformness, terrible mechanics, and ear rings, I just counted him out as pathetic.

Hey Wade - while we're on the "right to box" question, you make the call: Batter in box (right handed) / runner on third / pitcher throws ball, ball hits catchers foot and starts rolling left (towards 3 base foul line) through the batters box and towards 3rd base dugout. The baserunner on 3rd starts home, the catcher hops up to retrieve the ball and attempt a tag at home.......okay as all this is happening, the batter inadvertently KICKS the ball and the ball rolls way out of reach of the catcher - and the runner scores.
The coach of the team in the field comes to the umpire and argues interference - The Blue says it was accidental so it was not interference. So then the coach asks for a dead ball call and send the runner back to 3rd base, Blue says NOPE!!! Run counts, game goes on.
In my little pea-brain I'm thinkin either interference or dead ball.....but no run should score when the batter kicks the ball.

What is the proper call on that play?
Don't run through the screen door....you might strain yourself.

Speaking ASA

It is interference. The batter is out. All runners are returned to the base last touched at the time of the INT.

no doubt about it.. what he said. "accidental" has nothing to do with the INT on this play.

I would like to say that you (good) umps don't get enough credit, and I really appreciate your input and time on The Bucket explaining these questions. The Ump's corner is among my favorite reads.
Thank You. :)
Don't worry about tomorrow. You did that yesterday.

Here is a similar one I had last year with an interesting twist. I'm PU, R1 on 2B. RH batter. Pitch thrown, R1 tries to steal 3B. Catcher (F2) throws ball toward 3B hits batter in the helmit. Batter never moved. Ball bounces off batter over the backstop into dead ball territory.

Ruling: Dead ball, R1 awarded 3B and Home, (2 bases from the realease of the throw), no interference :D

Generally speaking, a husband only. But here in California many choose alternative lifestyles.

It's better to keep your mouth shut and look like you're stupid......

Had this one last weekend. ASA ruleset

R1 on 2nd, steal attempt. Batter stays in the box, doesn't move on low pitch. Catcher blocks ball and ball ends up right in front of catcher, who tries to throw around batter to 3B. PU calls INT on batter, runner on 3B out, batter remains with count.

I suspect not the proper ruling here? Should be batter out, runner returns to 2nd correct?
