Change the move up date from Jan. 1 to sept. 1

For example... Should a 99, 97, 95 be able to play down until jan 1 or change the policy to sept 1. Just wanting to see other peoples opinion on this rule.

Might want to review some history. Move-up date for ASA and some of the other sanctioning organizations was September 1. Date was moved to Jan 1 or Dec 31 (depending on organization) because of all of the issues raised then. If I'm remembering correctly, one of the big arguments for changing the date to the first of the year was so girls with late-year birthdays, and presumably less mature, weren't forced to move up.

Just play up and make your team better. Dont worry about the hardware hunting little teams.
If they are playing down in the fall they are usualy not a very strong team. your team will either get better or beat them. ;)

IMO, this will be a continuing debate.

With making the date Sept 1, my October 99 would become equivilant to the Jan 99s right now playing 10u. How would that be fair to the Sept 1 00s or better yet, Sept 1 01s? You would still have 11 year olds playing 10u level.

It doesn't matter what date you make the age limit, there will always be older girls playing down against the younger girls. Do I agree in playing down? At times yes, at times no. You have a small 11 year old, play her down. BUT a mature 11 year old player should play up to the next level. Same with 12u, 14u, etc........

This is the trend here in Houston, If you are a 99 team, you should move to 12u in the fall, you have to play 12u in Jan anyway. What good would your daughter gain playing 10u against an '01??

How about this one, have your end of year tourney @ the end of your season! If you want your end of year tourney (World Series or Nationals or Whatever) in July or August, have your move up date immediately after, not 5 months later. If you want your move up date to be Jan 1 then have your end of year tourney in December. Bet nobody complains about the heat in that one. ;)

This is great. It is good to see what everyone feels about this topic. I would like to see as many votes as possible. I dont always have problems with girls playing down and I think no matter what a rule is there will always be some concerns. It would be to tough to know if a player is ready or not ready to move up. But a 99 is a 99 no matter if she is born in jan or dec. We have girls on our team who are a lttle better as a younger player than one of the older ones. We must remember this is select not rec or "Fall Ball". If a child is not ready to compete with her age then dont put her on a select team. Answer this: Would you put your child up against a 16u team when she should be a 12u player. Not me!!!

My DD is an Oct 98. I definitely see both sides of the argument. I looked at it as openly as possible. While she is going to play TB against kids a bit older, she is school wise one of the older kids. Won't that be a benefit as she approaches college? She now has an extra year to develop before High School. Since she is only in sixth grade now, while most kids playing as 98's are in seventh. Guess only time will tell.

Agreed...for everyone's argument about development and "playing down"...go play rec. Don't understand why a 97 would still be playing 12U ball in November...Why have the national tournament in August, just so your dd can play that same age bracket afterwards even knowing she has to move up in Jan.

Take your licks like the rest of us playing up and get ready for the Spring/Summer!
